HADLOCK HEADLINES: SEA DOGS VS ROCK CATS GAME 1 POST

SEA DOGS VS ROCK CATS 075A
SS JOSE IGLASIAS FLIPS TO 2ND BASE FOR THE FORCE OUT
Folks, former Sea Dogs pitcher Chris Province did not enjoy his return to Hadlock. Province was included in the deal between the Sox and Twins that sent Boof Bonzer to the Red Sox system.

Province entered the game with the Rock Cats leading 4 - 3. After a couple hits and 4 runs walked in, he departed with the Sea Dogs pulling ahead 8-4. Catcher Luis Exposito then emptied the bases with a 3RBI triple to deep right center. DH Yamaico Navaro followed with another triple. Dogs up 12-4.

The Sea Dogs used solid pitching the rest of the way to beat the New Britain Rock Cats 13-4.

GAME WRAP BY PORTLAND SEA DOGS

On a night where fireworks filled the night sky after the game, the Portland Sea Dogs had a fireworks show of their own on the field, defeating the New Britain Rock Cats, 13-4.
The runs started early for the 'Dogs, as they faced the Minnesota Twins 2009 Minor League Pitcher of the Year, David Bromberg. Knowing that Bromberg had the stuff to shut them down, Portland pounced early.

The Sea Dogs were able to strike in the bottom of the second inning. After consecutive singles from Jose Iglesias and Chiang, Will Vasquez grounded a ball to third base, which looked to be a taylor-made double play ball. The throw from second baseman Steve Singleton to first baseman Chris Parmalee was low, leaving Vasquez safe at first. With heads-up base running, Iglesias went from third to home on the bad throw, and a bad throw from Parmalee to home plate ensured that the Iglesias would score, making it 1-0 Portland. The run was unearned.

The Sea Dogs started the third inning with a 1-0 lead, but could not leave the inning the same way, as Juan Portice hit a 2-out solo home-run off of of a 1-1 Stephen Fife offering, evening up the score at 1-1.

The Rock Cats broke the 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth inning. Joe Benson hit a sharp ground ball to Jose Iglesias, but a poor throw to first base allowed Benson to reach and take second. Danny Lehmann laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, moving Benson to third. Ben Revere then hit a fly ball to Ryan Kalish. The throw to home was close, but Benson beat the throw, giving the 'Cats a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Jose Iglesias lead with a double (his 7th multi hit game). Chiang grounded out, but moved Iglesias to 3rd. With Jose at third and the infield playing in, Will Vasquez hit a one out bloop single, scoring Iglesias and tying the game at 2-2. It was the first hit with runners in scoring position for the sea dogs, as well as Vasquez's first Double-A RBI.

After Fife went six strong innings giving up only one earned run in his longest appearance of the year, Ryne Lawson came in and got himself in to trouble. Mark Dolence singled and stole second. A Wild pitch from Lawson got Dolence to third with nobody out. Benson drew a walk on a 3-2 count, then Danny Lehmann roped a single which scored Dolence, giving New Britain a 3-2 lead.

The bleeding didn't stop for Lawson after that. Ben Revere put down a bunt which advanced Joe Benson to third. A Rene Tosoni sac fly to Ryan Kalish scored Joe Benson, and after the top of the seventh, the Rock Cats had a 4-2 lead. Luckily for Lawson, a big inning for the Sea Dogs gave him the victory.

Joe Testa (0-3) came in after Bromberg's evening was completed (six innings, nine hits, and two runs in a No Decision) and pitched very poorly. Testa did not even pitch an inning, after giving up a single to Ryan Kalish and back to back walks to Exposito and Apodaca.

Former Sea Dog Chris Province came in to the game to to clean up Testa's mess, but did not fair well. Yamaico Navarro grounded in to a fielders choice, but it gained the Sea Dogs a run, making the score 4-3. Province continued New Britain's control issues in the inning, walking in Chih-Hsien Chiang, tying up the score. Will Vasquez then came to the plate and ripped a single, scoring Apodaca, giving the Sea Dogs a 5-4 lead. Another Province walk, this time to Nate Spears, gave the 'Dogs a 6-4 lead. A clearly shaken Province then gave up another bases loaded walk, bumping the score to 7-4. Province only went a third of an inning, giving up one hit, but five walks.

Relief pitcher Henry Arias came in after Province, and gave up an instant bases clearing triple to Luis Exposito, whcih scored Spears, Lin and Kalish. Juan Apodaca grounded out for the second out of the inning, then Yamico Navarro blasted another triple, scoring Luis Exposito. After the dust settled, the Sea Dogs put up a ten run inning, including four bases loaded walks.

The game was in cruise control after that. Ryan Kalish hit a sac fly which scored Vasquez in the bottom of the eighth inning which ended the scoring for the night.

Robert Coello pitched a clean ninth inning, giving the Sea Dogs the Victory.

The 'Dogs and 'Cats go at it tomorrow at Hadlock, as Felix Dubront gets the start for Portland.

KELLY INCONSISTENT, DOGS LOSE 9 - 3 TO BINGHAMTON #redsox @Jerry_Remy

The Binghamton Mets continue to pound the ball all over the field, nailing the Sea Dogs for 13 hits and 9 runs. The Sea Dogs had chances but were just 2 - 12 with runners in scoring position. The Dogs left 7 men on base.

The Mets left 6 men on base but were 7 - 14 with runners in scoring position. Zack Lutz and Carlos Guzman had 3 hits apiece for the Mets.

Game Wrap Courtesy Portland Sea Dogs

A night after the Sea Dogs were able to quiet the bats of Binghamton, the B-Mets bats woke up and shook the ‘Dogs.

Sea Dogs starter and top Red Sox prospect Casey Kelly picked up the start and ran in to trouble right away, but the 20 year old responded well. After a 39 pitch first inning looked like it could throw Kelly’s night off, he responded by striking out the side in the second inning. A double from Zach Lutz in the third inning chased him out of the game, and overall, Kelly, who recorded his first loss (0-1) went two and a third, giving up 3 earned runs, 5 hits, striking out 3.

The B-Mets jumped on Kelly early. Kurt Nieuwenhuis singled and stole second base. After a Jose Coronado groundout advanced Nieuwenhuis to third, Lucas Duda ripped single to centerfield, giving the Mets an early 1-0 lead.

The Mets struck again in the inning, after catcher Luke Montz drove a deep fly ball to Ryan Kalish who was able to make a very difficult catch, but allowed Lucas Duda to get the second run of the inning.

Luke Montz continued to be a pain to Sea Dogs pitching in the third inning as well. After a double, Zach Lutz advanced to third on a wild pitch by Eammon Portice. Luke Montz struck a single, which gave Binghamton a 3-0 lead.

Eammon Portice found plenty of trouble in the fifth inning. Duda and Lutz started off the inning with singles. After a D.J. Wabick pop out, Luke Montz came to the plate and doubled the Portice offering which plated Duda. Up next was Carlos Guzman, who, like Montz, nailed a double which scored two runs (Lutz and Montz), giving the Mets a 6-0 lead. Portice went two and two thirds of an inning, giving up six hits and three runs.

Eddie Kunz, who picked up the victory (2-2), had a solid start Binghamton, but battled control issues the entire night. He was able to get out of jams in the top of the fourth and fifth, innings where the first two Sea Dog batters got on base.

Kunz was pulled after five plus innings after loading the bags. He was replaced by Jose De La Torre, who uncorked a wild pitched that scored Jason Place, giving the Sea Dogs their first run of the night. De La Torre then walked in Nate Spears. De La Torre’s night did not get any easier, as a Che-Hsuan Lin single drove in Ray Chang, making it 6-3 Mets. Lin’s single chased De La Torre, who did not record an out.

De La Torre was promptly replaced by Roy Merritt, who was able to navigate his way out of the inning without giving up a run. He came out for the seventh inning as well and pitched a clean frame.

T.J. Large entered the game after Eammon Portice, but made a very costly mistake. With Kirk Nieuwenhaus and Lucas Duda on the bases, Large gave up the gopher ball to Zach Lutz, which gave the Mets a 9-3 lead. Large went two innings, giving up three runs on two hits.

Santo Luis, who earlier in the road trip was designated for assignment and cleared waivers, returned to the Sea Dogs and relived Large.

Portland splits the series with the Mets, and have an off day tomorrow. They return to action Friday against New Britain.

RYNE MILLER PITCHES A GEM, SEA DOGS SHUT OUT BINGHAMTON #portlandseadogs

Ryne Miller has struggled this season for the Sea Dogs, but came up with a gem in Binghamton, going 6 strong innings allowing only 1 hit. Here is the wrap up from Mike Antonellis.

On a cold night in Binghamton, New York, the Portland Sea Dogs were able to win a hard-fought 2-0 ballgame.

Ryne Miller (1-1) had the longest start of any Sea Dogs starter of the 2010 season and picked up a victory. Miller pitched a gem, going six scoreless, giving up only one hit. Ryne had two trouble spots in the game, but pitched out of them well. After a leadoff walk and steal of second by Kirk Nieuwenhuis in the first inning, Miller got Lucas Duda to pop out and Zach Lutz to fly out to Ryan Kalish.

Miller also ran in to some trouble in the bottom of the 6th, but with great defensive plays by Ray Chang, and an inning ending 4-6-3 double play, the Sea Dogs preserved a 2-0 lead after 6 innings.

Mets starter Mike Antonini (2-2) had a quality start, pitching seven innings, allowing six hits and two runs, but did not have any offensive production to help him out. Derrick Ellison and Joshn Stinson both pitched scoreless innings in relief after Antonini’s evening was over.

The Sea Dogs got on the board in the top of the 5th inning. Lars Anderson singled to start the inning. After Mike Antonini was able to get Che-Hsuan Lin to fly out and Jose Iglesias to pop out to second, the inning took a turn. Anderson stole his first base of the season, and then Chih-Hisen Chiang drove in Lars on a line drive hit to left fielder D.J. Wabick. Wabick’s throw was on-line, but was dropped by catcher Luke Montz.

With two outs in the 6th inning, Ryan Kalish took a 2-2 Antonini offering and drove it out over the right field wall of NYSGE stadium, giving Portland a 2-0 lead.

Jason Rice came on after Miller, and found trouble quickly. After allowing the first two batters of the inning to reach base (hitting Zach Lutz and a single by D.J. Wabick), Rice settled in. He got Luke Montz to fowl out to the catcher. After Carlos Guzman struck out on a full count, Rice struck out Brahiam Maldonado to get out of the jam. Rice came out again in the 8th inning and pitched a clean frame.

Bryce Cox entered the game after Rice, and was able to pick up his second save of the season. The Sea Dogs are now 8-4 on the road.

The Sea Dogs and B-Mets finish their rain-shortened two game series tomorrow, as Kyle Weiland takes on Eddie Kunz. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35.

SEA DOGS WIN 3 OF 4 IN TRENTON, WIN SUNDAY 9-5

Lars Anderson is on a tear! Sunday Lars had a 2 out RBI and a 3 run home run. Lars raised his average to .328, has 5 HRs and 16 RBIs.

All 9 Portland Sea Dogs starters got a hit today in the 9 - 5 win.

n Sunday afternoon, the Portland Sea Dogs were down, but they were far from out. Portland trailed the Trenton Thunder 4-2 after six innings of play, but two runs in the seventh, and three in the ninth gave the visitors a 9-5 comeback win at Waterfront Park. Lars Anderson keyed the comeback with an RBI single, as well as a three-run bomb.

The Sea Dogs got the scoring started right away. Nate Spears led off the game with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ray Chang, and found his way home on a double to right-center by Ryan Kalish. The Thunder evened the score in the bottom of the first on a run by Austin Krum, but Portland responded, as Juan Apodaca led off the second inning with a home run to right field.

In the bottom of the third, Trenton took the lead. Austin Krum started the rally with a walk, moved to second on a balk, and ultimately scored when Austin Romine doubled to center. Romine didn't stay at second base for very long, as Brandon Laird knocked him in with a single up the middle. Three innings later, the Thunder added to their lead, when Marcos Vechionacci singled home Daniel Brewer, who tripled to right-center.

Jeremy Bleich had a solid start on the mound for the Thunder, allowing two runs, four hits, and two walks, while striking out two, in five innings. However, once he and Josh Schmidt were taken out of the game, the Sea Dogs' bats came to life.

Portland's comeback started in the seventh. Ray Chang and Luis Exposito reached base with a couple of singles, setting the table for Lars Anderson and Juan Apodaca. Anderson brought the Sea Dogs within a run with a single to right, before Apodaca knotted the score with a double down the left field line. Anderson was thrown out at home plate, but the damage was done.

The score stayed tied until the ninth inning, when the visitors turned a tie game into a blowout. Ryan Kalish and Luis Exposito each walked to start the frame, before Lars Anderson cranked a three-run homer to right field, putting Portland ahead, 7-4. The Sea Dogs weren't done yet, as Nate Spears added to the offense with a two-run double to right-center, scoring Juan Apodaca and Che-Hsuan Lin.

Thanks to Spears' double, all nine batters in the Sea Dogs' order picked up at least one hit, as the team finished with a total of 15.

The Thunder got a run back in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn't enough, as Portland finished their series win with a 9-5 victory.

For the second time in the series, the pitchers of record were identical. Robert Coello (3-1) earned the win for the Sea Dogs, going two innings, allowing one run, two hits, and one walk, while striking out three. Noel Castillo (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing five runs in 1/3 of an inning.

With the Trenton series finished, the Sea Dogs will now turn their attention to a three-game series against the Binghamton Mets. The first game of that series takes place on Monday night at 6:35. Ryne Miller (0-1, 6.92) will get the start for Portland, going up against Binghamton's Mike Antonini (2-1, 6.28).

DOGS BEAT TRENTON 5 - 2

Chih-Hsien Chiang didn't have had any hits at the plate, but he was one of the biggest contributors for the Portland Sea Dogs on Saturday night. The Portland left fielder drove in a couple of runs, while also throwing out Austin Romine at home plate, as the Sea Dogs defeated the Trenton Thunder, 5-2 at Waterfront Park.

In the top of the second inning, the Sea Dogs scored first. Lars Anderson led off the frame with an infield single, and was followed by Ray Chang, who doubled down the left field line. Two batters later, Chih-Hsien Chiang stepped in, bringing home Anderson with a ground out to second.

Stephen Fife and Ryan Pope got the nods for their respective clubs, and proceeded to pitch very well for the next three innings.

Pope began to tire in the top of the sixth, and Portland took advantage. Once again, it was Anderson and Chang setting the table, except this time, Anderson doubled, and Chang singled. Jose Iglesias loaded the bases, rifling a single off of the Thunder starter, loading the bases for Chiang. The Sea Dogs' left fielder picked up his second RBI of the night, knocking in Anderson with a fly ball to right. The visitors added two more runs in that inning, on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Ryan Kalish.

The Thunder ended the Sea Dogs' shutout bid in the bottom of the sixth. Jose Gil led off with a double, moved to third on a Damon Sublett single, and scored on Reid Gorecki's grounder to short. Gil was in the game for Austin Romine, who was ejected after being gunned down at the plate by Chiang in the third.

Portland needed just one pitch to regain their four-run advantage, as Nate Spears led off the seventh with a towering home run to right field.

Both starting pitchers saw their nights end in the sixth, and both were the pitchers of record. Stephen Fife (1-1) picked up his first win in Double-A for Portland, going five-plus innings, allowing one run, five hits, and three walks, while striking out five. Ryan Pope (0-2) was the losing pitcher for Trenton, going 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs, seven hits, and five walks, while striking out five.

TJ Large took over for Fife, going 2 2/3 scoreless innings in his first appearance of the season. Anderson and Chang were two of the other bright spots for the Sea Dogs, as both players had two hits, while reaching base three times each.

The Sea Dogs now lead this series 2-1. They and the Thunder will conclude their four-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1:05. Felix Doubront (2-0, 3.21) makes the start for Portland, going up against Trenton's Jeremy Bleich (1-1, 2.04).

METS POUND ON SEA DOGS

Home runs were the story of Tuesday night's game at Hadlock Field, as the Binghamton Mets went deep three times in a 15-3 win over the Portland Sea Dogs. Kirk Nieuwenheis led the offensive attack for Binghamton, going 5-for-6 with a three extra base hits, and four RBI.

The Mets got the scoring started right out of the gates. Kirk Nieuwenheis led off the game with a single up the middle, and Nick Evans drove him in with a home run to right-center.

Ryne Miller kept Binghamton off of the scoreboard during the top of the second inning, but the visitors got one big hit in the third. After a lead-off groundout by Nick Evans, the Mets received three consecutive walks. With Zach Lutz, Lucas Duda, and DJ Wabick all on base, Jose Coronado drove a grand slam over the right field wall, giving his club a 6-0 lead. Miller finished the third inning, but was pulled before the fourth, allowing six runs, five hits, and four walks, while striking out five. The Portland right-hander suffered the loss, dropping his record to 0-1 on the season.

Control issues plagued the Mets as well, as the Sea Dogs got their first run in the bottom of the fourth. Nate Spears was hit by a pitch to start the frame, and three batters later, Ray Chang knocked him in with a single to right field. Portland's offensive output continued in the fifth, when Luis Exposito picked up a two-run double to left field.

As the game progressed, Binghamton salted away the win, closing out the Sea Dogs, 15-3.

Scott Shaw (2-0) was the winning pitcher for the Mets, going five innings, allowing three runs, four hits, and four walks, while striking out two.

For Portland, Nate Spears became the seventh different position player to pitch in a game with the Sea Dogs. In one inning, Spears allowed three runs on two hits, while walking one.

The Sea Dogs and Mets will conclude their three-game series on Wednesday afternoon at 12:00. Kyle Weiland (0-1, 5.40) will make his third start of the season for Portland, opposed by Binghamton's Mike Antonini (1-1, 7.27)

DOGS WIN, ANDERSON ON A ROLL

LARS ANDERSON BLASTS HIS 3RD HR OF THE SEASON (PHOTO JEFF SCHOOLS/CMSB)

The Portland Sea Dogs made their 1,000th regular season game as an affiliate of the Boston Red Sox one for the win column defeating the Binghamton Mets 7-3 at Hadlock Field Monday night.

Robert Coello was strong in relief of Portland starter Felix Doubront, as he was nearly unhittable over three innings. Coello relinquished just one hit while striking out four in the first of three games against their Eastern Division rivals.

A solo homer from Lars Anderson in the third and a two-run Ryan Kalish in the sixth blast paced a patient Sea Dog offense that drew nine walks, six of which came against Binghamton starter Dylan Owen.

Binghamton took the early lead as they scraped one across in the top of the first of Doubront on a two out run scoring single off the bat of third baseman Zach Lutz.

However the 1-0 Met advantage would not last long as the Sea Dogs would get to Binghamton starter Dylan Owen for two runs in the first.

After a Luis Exposito ground out to third scored Kalish, Anderson singled in Nate Spears to give the Sea Dogs a 2-1 advantage. The RBI single extended Anderson’s hitting streak to seven games.

The Sea Dogs would tack on two more in the second without the aid of a hit. Owen was able to find anything but the strike zone, walking three and hitting a batter in the half inning. A walk to Che-Hsuan Lin would force in Jose Iglesias, and a Nate Spears sacrifice fly would yield the other second inning run for Portland.

After giving up a run in the first inning, Sea Dog starter Felix Doubront looked every bit the ace retiring eight straight Mets batters before walking the first man he faced in the fourth. Doubront (2-0) tossed five strong innings allowing three runs on six hits while striking out two and walking two to earn his second win of the season.

The Sea Dogs offense would tack on two more runs in the sixth on the Kalish line drive homer to right which would round out the scoring for the night.

Binghamton start Dylan Owen (1-1) would suffer the loss surrendering five runs on five hits in five innings of work.

Bryce Cox entered to the game in the ninth to preserve the Sea Dogs 7-3 victory over the Mets in front of 3, 071 fans.

The same two teams meet at 6:00 Pm at Hadlock Field on Wednesday night. RHP Ryne Miller (0-0, 360 ERA) takes the mound for the Sea Dogs. He’ll be opposed by RHP Scott Shaw (1-0, 12.27 ERA) for the Mets.

DOGS SPLIT DH, KELLY PITCHES 3 STRONG

Game One - The Sea Dogs and Trenton Thunder participated in Turn up the clock day, wearing the uniforms of the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees respectively. Trenton looked like the Yankees in the 1st inning, opening the scoring early with back to back doubles by Austin Krum and David Adams to take a 1 - 0 lead over the Sea Dogs.

The Thunder took a 2 - 0 lead in the 4th with a very odd play. The Thunder's Luis Nunez hit a liner to right field that looked like Sea Dogs left fielder Ryan Kalish would get to it. Kalish did not, but short hopped it and quickly got it into shortstop Jose Iglasias who clearly tagged 2nd for the force. Iglasias then threw to 3rd baseman Ray Chang, who tagged the Trenton runner for what should have been the third out. The Sea Dogs started to leave the field, but the umpire crew stopped them saying there were only 2 outs. Manager Arnie Beyeler came out for a short argument. The crew ruled that Iglasias missed 2nd base, allowing Brandon Laird to score. Dogs pitcher Steven Fife got Justin Snyder to fly out on the next play.

The Thunder tacked on another run in the 5th on a Laird RBI single.

The only run for the Sea Dogs came in the 9th when Lars Anderson turned on a fastball and blasted it halfway up the US Cellular Pavillion for his 2nd Hr of the season, ending the scoring giving the Thunder the 3 -1 win.

Game Two - Red Sox top prospect Casey Kelly got his first Hadlock Field start in the rainy 2nd game of the day. Kelly effectively worked through the 1st getting allowing the only 2 hits he would allow, but stranding both runners.

Ryan Kalish opened the Sea Dogs half of the 1st with a walk. He promptly stole 2nd and moved to 3rd on a passed ball by Trenton. Luis Exposito delivered Kalish home with a Maine Monster double and Lars Anderson doubled to left plating Exposito to put the Sea Dogs up quickly 2 - 0.

Kelly then went to worked and retired the next 6 batter in a row, with 2 strikeouts looking to end his day with 3 innings. Kelly went 3, allowed 2 hits, 0 runs and had 2 Ks.

Eammon Portice started the 4th inning for the Sea Dogs and was promptly greeted with a Brandon Laird blast off the Coke sign in left center field. Portice settled down, and pitching took over the rest of the way as the Sea Dogs win the second 2 - 1.

Next Game in the home stand in Monday against the Binghamton Mets.

PHOTO JEFF SCHOOLS/CMSB MEDIA
New Britain, CT- The Portland Sea Dogs got off of the bus on Monday night, and their bats were certainly ready. The Sea Dogs put four runs on the board in the first inning, and that proved to be plenty, as Portland defeated the New Britain Rock Cats 8-2 in the first of three games at New Britain Stadium.

Ryan Kalish and Nate Spears started the rally with a couple of singles. Luis Exposito drove in Kalish with a sacrifice fly, before consecutive RBI doubles by Yamaico Navarro and Ray Chang. Jose Iglesias kept the strong inning going, knocking in Chang with a single to right.
