Sea Dogs Take one from the B-Mets

The Portland Sea Dogs kicked off their final homestand of the 2010 season on the right note defeating the Binghamton Mets 7-6 Monday night at Hadlock Field before a 5,126 fans. The Sea Dogs’ win gives Portland and Binghamton identical 64-70 records for the season.

A rare double steal by the Sea Dogs would set-up the game winning run for Portland. Tied at six in the bottom of the fifth inning, Binghamton starter Robert Carson issued one out walks to Anthony Rizzo and Ryan Khoury. Rizzo and Khoury would pull-off a double steal advancing to second and third. Jorge Padron then lifted a fly ball to center-field; Rizzo tagged from third and scored what proved to be the game winning. The stolen base was Khoury’s third and Rizzo’s fourth of the season.

The Sea Dogs struck for six runs in the first two innings off Binghamton Carson (1-6), who suffers the loss. Nate Spears picked-up his 73rd RBI of the season with a RBI single scoring Jose Iglesias in the first to give the Sea Dogs a quick 1-0 lead. In the second inning, Portland exploded for five runs, the big hit a two run double by Luis Exposito collecting his team leading 88th and 89th RBI’s.

Sea Dogs starter Jeremy Kehrt cruised through the first four innings yielding only one run. However, in the fifth, the Binghamton bats came alive against Kehrt to score five runs off seven hits to tie the game at six. Zach Lutz and Marshall Hubbard provided RBI singles, Brahiam Maldonado and Salomon Manriquez chipped in with RBI doubles, and Eric Cambell added a sacrifice fly. Kehrt would not get through the inning, giving way to Ryne Reynoso who retired Jordany Valdespin to end the inning.

Reynoso (2-0) tossed 3.2 shutout innings yielding two hits to earn his second win.

Daniel Turpen pitched a scoreless ninth to notch his second save with the Sea Dogs.

Chih-Hsien Chiang had a perfect 3-for-3 night, collecting his 35th double of the season, scoring a run, and picking-up an RBI. He has now hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games.

The Sea Dogs are down to seven games in the 2010 season. On Tuesday night Stephen Fife (6-6, 5.03) will get the start for the Sea Dogs at 7:00 PM against the Binghamton Mets. Fife will be opposed by Binghamton righty Eric Beaulac (0-1, 5.40). Prior to the game the Sea Dogs will induct Mike Redmond and Bill Troubh into the Portland Sea Dogs Hall of Fame.

Sea Dogs Finish up the Road Schedule, Fall to New Hampshire

The Portland Sea Dogs and New Hampshire Fisher Cats had quite the battle going through the first six innings, with the Fisher Cats leading 2-1. However, New Hampshire blew things open in the seventh, hitting two home runs for a 6-3 win in the series finale at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium.

The Sea Dogs opened the scoring in the top of the second. Ryan Lavarnway led off with a double, and advanced to third base on a single by Ray Chang. Jorge Padron followed by grounding into a double play, but Lavarnway was able to cross home plate.

In the third inning, the Fisher Cats came back to take the lead. With one out, Luis Sanchez, Darin Mastroianni, and Adeiny Hechavarria connected on consecutive singles, with Hechavarria's hit plating Sanchez. After a passed ball advanced the runners to second and third, Eric Thames grounded to short, plating Mastroianni with the go-ahead run.

The score stayed that way until the seventh, when New Hampshire added to their lead with a pair of homers. Jonathan Jaspe led off the frame with a solo shot to right field, putting the home team ahead by two. Then, with two men on and two men out, Eric Thames clobbered a three-run blast to right, making the score 6-1.

The Sea Dogs scored a pair of runs in the ninth, despite the fact that the team was held hitless. Ryan Lavarnway's bases loaded walk plated one run, while Ray Chang's hit by pitch scored the other, as the visitors fell, 6-3.

David Purcey (1-1) got his second decision in as many days, pitching a perfect fourth inning on two strikeouts for the win. Maxwell pitches strong again, Sea Dogs beat Fisher Cats 5 - 2

OFFICIAL SEA DOGS GAME WRAP
For the past month and a half, Blake Maxwell has been one of the best pitchers on Portland's staff. On Saturday night, he continued to pitch well, allowing two runs on five hits in five and two-thirds innings, as the Sea Dogs picked up a 5-2 win at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium.

Both starting pitchers were tremendous, keeping the game scoreless through the first five innings of play. Kyle Drabek went those five innings for the Fisher Cats, allowing one hit and four walks, while striking out four.

Once New Hampshire went to the bullpen, the Sea Dogs' offense came to life. With David Purcey in the game, Chih-Hsien Chiang and Nate Spears started the sixth inning with consecutive singles. After a pair of

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats will have to wait at least one more day to clinch a spot in the 2010 Eastern League Playoffs. With the score tied at one in the sixth, Ryan Lavarnway blasted a three-run homer to center field. Mitch Herold pitched two and one-third scoreless innings in relief, as the Portland Sea Dogs picked up a 5-1 win at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium.

The first inning of the game might have been one of the weirdest this season, as the two teams combined for four walks, four strikeouts, and 56 pitches, without a single hit falling in. In the second inning, the Sea Dogs opened the scoring. With one out, Chih-Hsien Chiang walked and Juan Carlos Linares doubled, putting a pair of runners in scoring position. Nate Spears followed with a groundout to short, but the ball was hit deep enough to score Chiang.

Harrisburg tied the score in the second, when Tim Pahuta walked, Jhonatan Solano doubled, and Edgardo Baez picked up the RBI.

One inning later, the Senators took their first lead of the night. With one out, Jesus Valdez grounded a double down the left field line. The next batter up was Chris Marrero, who knocked in Valdez with a single to right. Tim Pahuta added to that lead, hitting a home run on the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth.

#SeaDogs Use the Longball to Win (Because Chicks Dig It)

Anthony Rizzo blasted two home runs including a grand slam in the seventh inning to propel the Sea Dogs to 9-8 comeback win over the Altoona Curve (71-52) Thursday afternoon at Hadlock Field. The Sea Dogs (59-64) end a three game losing streak salvaging the final game of the series.

Portland trailed 6-0 after two innings but collected nine runs including a season high five home runs to earn the victory.

Altoona’s Josh Harrison entered the game with one home run in 116 games this season; by the time the second inning ended on Thursday he had three. Harrison hit a solo shot over the Maine Monster in the first to give Altoona a 1-0 lead. One inning later, Harrison hit a two run homer over the Maine Monster to cap a five run second inning for the Curve. The six runs came off Portland starter Kyle Weiland. Weiland lasted only four innings surrendering six runs on four hits and yielding three walks.

Ryne Lawson (6-5) would relieve Weiland and keep Portland in the game by shutting down the Curve for three innings giving up only one hit and two walks to earn the win.

Nate Spears got the Sea Dogs comeback started with his 14th home run of the season, a two run shot into the U.S. Cellular Pavilion in the fourth off Altoona starter Bryan Morris.

Anthony Rizzo hit his first home run of the game in the sixth, a solo shot off reliever Tom Boleska to cut the lead in half; 6-3.

In the seventh, the Sea Dogs would explode for three home runs and six runs to take their first lead of the game 9-6. Ryan Lavarnway led off the inning with his third home run in a Sea Dogs uniform. The next three batters would single to load the bases. After Ray Chang was called out on strikes and Jose Iglesias popped out, Rizzo blasted his second home run of the game, a grand slam to give Portland an 8-6 lead. The home run was his team leading 18th. Luis Exposito would follow with his 10th homer of the year giving the Sea Dogs back-to-back homers for the first time since April 22nd verse Trenton when Lars Anderson and Ray Chang accomplished the feat.

Ryne Reynoso pitched the final two innings for Portland earning his first save of the season.

Boleska (1-1) suffers the loss for Altoona giving up five runs on five hits in one inning of work.

The Sea Dogs will welcome the Trenton Thunder (Yankees) to town on Friday night at 7:00 PM for a three game weekend series. Jeremy Kehrt (2-9, 4.82) gets the nod for Portland; he’ll be opposed by Trenton’s Cory Arbiso (4-2, 3.61).

Notes: Che-Hsuan Lin extended his hitting streak to a season high eight games with a seventh inning single. The six run deficit the Sea Dogs overcame was the largest this season; the previous high was four runs on August 3rd against the Bowie Baysox. Anthony Rizzo now leads the Red Sox farm system with 23 combined home runs and 87 RBI. Rizzo now has 7 home runs and 25 RBI in August, he just 4 RBI’s shy of a new franchise record for RBI’s in the month of August. For the first time this season Exposito hit in the five spot, all 109 previous games he batted clean-up. It was the first time the Sea Dogs collected five home runs in a game since July 20, 2009 at New Britain. The paid attendance was 6,173.

Jose Iglesias made his long awaited return to the Portland lineup, however, it was not enough as the Altoona scored four unanswered runs to defeat the Sea Dogs 4-2 before 6,588 at Hadlock Field on Tuesday night.

After scoring a run in each of the first two innings, Portland saw their bats stymied by the Altoona bullpen.  The combination of Michael Colla, Anthony Claggett and Daniel Moskos held the offense scoreless and allowed just two hits over the games’ final six innings.

Iglesias went 1-for-5 in his first Double-A action since May, and looked sharp in the field as he made the start at shortstop.

JOSE IGLESIAS RETURNS FROM INJURY TONIGHT
The Portland Sea Dogs return home tonight after and long road trip, and bring a much anticipated player with them.

Jose Iglesias has been out since May 29th, when he took a fastball off the wrist in a game against the New Britain Rock Cats. Iglesias was diagnosed with a deep bone bruise and slight fracture.

Iglesias has worked with the Sea Dogs throughout most of his stint on the injured list, taking ground balls with his glove hand. Jose regularly made crazy, backhanded plays while flipping the ball to various 2nd baseman.

Iglesias started a rehab stint with the Lowell Spinners a couple weeks ago, finishing with a .350 average.

Iglesias has been a pleasant surprise at the plate, leading the Sea Dogs in hitting when he got injured.

Make sure to head down to Hadlock to see Iglesias and the rest of the Sea Dogs, as they take on the Altoona Curve at 7PM. Good seats still available as hurler Alex Wilson takes the bump for the Sea Dogs, while Tony Wilson (4 - 2, 2.81 ERA) goes for Altoona.

To say that Anthony Rizzo is hitting well right now would be an understatement. On Thursday night, Rizzo went deep for the second straight game, giving him 16 home runs and 62 RBI in 84 games with the Sea Dogs. The rest of the offense also performed well, as Portland scored nine runs on 15 hits in a 9-2 win over the Bowie Baysox.

However, once he was out of the game, the visitors went right to work against the originally scheduled starter, Rick Zagone. Luis Exposito started the second inning by reaching on catcher's interference. Ryan Lavarnway then got the first hit of the game for Portland, doubling to left field. After an RBI groundout by Jorge Padron, the Sea Dogs strung three hits together from Ryan Khoury, Chih-Hsien Chiang, and Matt Sheely. #SeaDogs knock off Bowie 6-3

The Sea Dogs (55-60) scored four unearned runs in the eighth inning to erase a 3-2 deficit, and take the series opener from the Bowie Baysox (63-52), 6-3 on Tuesday night at Prince George’s Stadium.

Daniel Turpen (1-0) worked two perfect innings in relief of Jeremy Kehrt to notch his first win in the Red Sox system. Kehrt earned a quality start, allowing three runs on four hits in six innings pitched. Jason Rice picked up his 12th Double-A save with a scoreless ninth inning. Bowie reliever Raul Rivero (1-1) was saddled with the loss, surrendering all four unearned runs in the eighth inning.

Trailing 3-2 with two outs in the eighth inning, the Sea Dogs had Che-Hsuan Lin at second base with Nate Spears batting. Spears hit a soft ground ball up the first base line, but it went off the glove of Scott Mahoney, enabling Lin to score. The error opened up the flood gates for Bowie as Ray Chang (single), Luis Exposito (double) and Anthony Rizzo (single) had run-scoring hits.

Portland got off to a very quick start, scoring two runs off starter Steve Johnson. Lin started the game with a single, and Spears clocked a two-run homer down the right-field line, giving Portland a 2-0 lead before Bowie batted. Johnson would allow only two hits over the next six innings, yielding two runs, four hits and fanned five over seven.

The Baysox cut the deficit in half with a run in the second inning off Kehrt. Joel Guzman led off with a double, and scored when Brandon Waring hit into a 6-4-3 double play. Bowie tied the game in the next frame on Jonathan Tucker’s solo-homer to straight away left field.

Bowie untied the game in the sixth inning, scoring the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by Kehrt to take a 3-2 advantage. Carlos Rojas, who scored the run, led off the inning with a walk.

The Sea Dogs and Baysox meet in game two of the series on Wednesday night from Prince George’s Stadium beginning at 7:05. Portland has not named their starting pitcher; Bowie will have lefty Pedro Viola on the hill (3-1, 2.61). Rizzo Clears the Pavilion, but #PortlandSeaDogs Fall

The Richmond Flying Squirrels (56-57) scored a franchise record 16 runs as they smoked the Portland Sea Dogs 16-8 Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field in front of 6,804 fans.

The Sea Dogs opened the game with three straight base runners reaching base, scoring twice off Richmond starter Craig Westcott. Che-Hsuan Lin led off with a walk and scored on a Nate Spears double. Spears would score when Anthony Rizzo lined a single to right, giving the Sea Dogs the 2-1 lead.

The lead would be short lived as the Sea Dogs would allow a season high 16 runs as Richmond exploded for 18 hits including eight doubles and two home runs.

The Flying Squirrels would bat around in the third inning scoring six runs. Back-to-back doubles by Ryan Lormand and Darren Ford would tie the game at two. Nick Noonan’s two run homer gave Richmond the 4-2 lead and they never looked back as they pummeled the Sea Dogs. Richmond would put up crooked numbers scoring 15 runs over three innings; six runs in the third, four in the fourth and five in the fifth.

Portland starter Stephen Fife (6-4) would not get out of the fourth inning yielding 11 runs on 13 hits in 3.1 innings, the most allowed by a Portland starter this season.

Portland reliever Eammon Portice would not fair much better surrendering five runs on four hits in 2.2 innings including a three run homer to Sharlon Schoop in the fifth inning.

Schoop, Ford, and Neal would all collect four hits on the day for Richmond. Schoop knocked in six runs and Ford crossed the plate four times in the Richmond route.

Richmond starter Westcott (3-1) earned the win firing 5.1 innings allowing five runs on five hits.

Anthony Rizzo added a three run bomb over the U.S. Cellular Pavilion in right field in the fifth inning, his team leading 14th of the season. Rizzo was 4-for-5 on the day with four RBI.

KELLY THREW SEASON HIGH 93 PITCHES

Casey Kelly took the mound Friday night as the Richmond Flying Squirrels invaded Hadlock for the 1st time in their history. The Flying Squirrels are the AA Farm team of the San Francisco Giants. The Squirrels took advantage of their 1st visit, beating the Dogs 7 - 4.

Kelly used his full repertoire of pitches, hitting 93 on the gun with his fastball. As with most of his starts this year, Kelly had very good stuff, with little to show on the results side. He went 6 2/3 innings throwing 93 pitches (AA high pitch count), allowing 3 runs on 7 hits while striking out and walking 1.

Dogs lose tough 4-3 game, going 1 - 14 with RISP #portlandseadogs #redsox #milb #mlb #sblog

Sorry about the late posting, not sure why this didn't show yesterday.

Jeremy Kehrt had a rough start, allowing 3 runs in the first two innings, but battled to keep the game close. Kehrt finished throwing 5 innings, allowing 4 runs and 4 walks, which in the end, was his undoing.

Bowie's Ryan Adams torched Kehrt in the 1st with his Eastern League leading 38th double to give the BaySox the early lead. Kehrt loaded the bases in both the 1st and second innings.

The Sea Dogs offense was inconsistent Wednesday going 1 - 14 with runners in scoring position. The only run being scored when Wil Vasquez sacrificed home Chih-Hsein Chiang for the Sea Dogs 1st run. The only other offensive highlight for the Dogs was 2nd baseman Nate Spears, who went 3 - 5 with a double and 2 RBI. Spears was not immune from leaving runners on base, flying out and striking out looking with runners on 3rd.

Anthony Rizzo seems to be hitting stride despite #PortlandSeaDogs 6-3 loss to Bowie #redsox

OFFICIAL PORTLAND SEA DOGS GAME WRAP
The Bowie Baysox rebounded from Tuesday night’s pounding to defeat the Portland Sea Dogs 6-3 Wednesday night at Hadlock Field before 6,541 fans.    The Baysox used hot hitting on a humid Hadlock night and solid pitching to improve to 60-50 on the season.  The Sea Dogs fall to 53-57.

The Baysox offense rocked Sea Dogs’ starter Kyle Weiland scoring five runs (four earned) on ten hits in 4.2 innings.

Carlos Rojas got the scoring started for the Baysox with a two run double in the second inning to give Bowie a 2-0 lead.

#SeaDogs Snap a Losing Streak

It was a long and, at times, an arduous task, but on Tuesday night the Portland Sea Dogs were able to snap a four-game losing streak with a 14-8 win over the Bowie Baysox before a sellout crowd of 7,368 at Hadlock Field.

The Sea Dogs trailed by as much as 5-1 in the ballgame, they battled back to take a 6-5 lead, only to find themselves tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth. But the ever-resilient Sea Dog offense put up a crooked five spot on the Baysox to take an 11-6 lead in the bottom half of the sixth.

After Che-Hsuan Lin led off the sixth with a single, Nate Spears would spark the attack with a RBI triple to give the Sea Dogs a 7-6 lead. Six batters later Chih-Hsien Chiang would cap off the onslaught with a two-out, two-run double.

Of the many Sea Dogs’ offensive stalwarts, Lin and Anthony Rizzo lead the way. Lin reached base safely in five of six appearances, with three hits and four runs scored, while Rizzo was 4-5 with three doubles and four RBI.

As a sign of the back-and-forth game that was to come, both offenses traded blows in the first inning, with each side plating a run. The Baysox struck first on Ryan Adams RBI single that scored Greg Miclat who led the game off with a double.

In the bottom of the first, Lin would take advantage of Joel Guzman’s inability to cleanly field Nate Spears’ single to right to come around to score all the way from first to tie the game at one.

The tie would be short lived, as the Baysox would respond with a pair of runs in the second and third to take a 5-1 lead. Brandon Waring would score a run and both frames, and Carlos Rojas would drive in a run in both with a pair of two out RBI hits.

Down by four runs, the Sea Dogs would score three times in the third, and twice in the fourth to grab a 6-5 lead. Anthony Rizzo picked up three RBI in those two innings with a RBI double in third and a two-out, two-run double in the fourth to bring in the tying and go ahead runs.

Rizzo would add another two out RBI double during the Sea Dogs’ three run seventh. Jorge Padron added a two-run single in the inning to finish the evening with three two-out RBI.

Each starter’s outing seemed to be as short as the night was long, and neither would factor in the decision. Fife would be chased after just three innings of work, surrendering five runs on nine hits, while striking out three and walking three. The three innings of work is the shortest outing of the season for Fife.

For the Baysox, Gamboa also lasted just 3.0 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, he walked none and struck out four.

Blake Maxwell (2-0) picked up the win for the Sea Dogs, tossing three innings allowing one run on five hits, he struck out two and did not walk a batter. Mitch Herald came in and calmed down the Baysox offense with two scoreless innings of work. Bryce Cox worked the ninth inning and allowed two runs.

For the Baysox, Sean Gleason (1-1) picked up the loss as he threw two innings allowing four runs on five hits, he walked one and struck out one.

The Sea Dogs and Baysox will continue their three game series Wednesday night at 7:00 PM from Hadlock Field in Portland. RHP Kyle Weiland (6-3) will take the ball for Portland opposite Bowie RHP Steve Johnson (3-4).

#SeaDogs Road Trip Mercifully Ends

The Portland Sea Dogs will be eager to return home, as their four-game series against the Harrisburg Senators was one to forget. After dropping the first three games, Portland lost Sunday afternoon's finale in extra innings, as Devin Ivany hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eleventh, lifting Harrisburg to a 12-11 win, as well as a series sweep.

For the fifth time in seven games on the road trip, the Sea Dogs got on the board in the top of the first. Che-Hsuan Lin started the game by reaching on an error, and Yamaico Navarro followed with a double. After Nate Spears struck out, Luis Exposito knocked in a run with a grounder to third, and Anthony Rizzo singled in a run as well.

Portland stayed in the lead until the third inning, when the Senators put up a crooked number. With one out, Harrisburg had five straight hitters reach base, starting with back-to-back doubles by Marvin Lowrance and Chris Marrero. A single by Tim Pahuta and a walk to Adam Fox loaded the bases for Edgardo Baez, who crushed a grand slam to right field.

After seeing their starter give up a five-run inning, the Sea Dogs' hitters responded with a six-run inning of their own. After Ryan Lavarnway grounded out, Jorge Padron, Ryan Khoury, and Matt Sheely all singled. Che-Hsuan Lin followed with a walk, setting up a two-run single by Yamaico Navarro. Nate Spears put the visitors on top with a sacrifice fly, before consecutive doubles by Luis Exposito and Anthony Rizzo gave Portland an 8-5 lead.

The Senators came back with two runs in their half of the fourth on an RBI double by Marvin Lowrance and a sacrifice fly by Chris Marrero. However, Portland matched that half inning with two runs in the sixth. With one out, Yamaico Navarro doubled and Nate Spears singled, setting the table for Luis Exposito. The Sea Dogs' cleanup hitter whacked a double to left field, driving in both runners. The visitors added another run in the seventh on a Yamaico Navarro RBI double, taking an 11-7 lead.

Once again, Harrisburg came back, ultimately tying the game at eleven. In the bottom of the seventh, the Senators got runs on an Adam Fox RBI single, an Edgardo Baez groundout, and a wild pitch. The tying run came in the eighth inning, when Chris Marrero launched a home run to left field.

The game stayed tied until the eleventh inning, when Devin Ivany hit a walkoff home run with two outs, giving the Senators a 12-11 win.

Rafael Martin (4-2) was the winning pitcher, as he pitched three scoreless innings for Harrisburg. Ryne Lawson (5-5) suffered his second loss of the series for Portland, allowing one run in one and two-thirds innings.

The Sea Dogs will have Monday off, before returning to Hadlock Field on Tuesday for a three-game series against the Bowie Baysox. Stephen Fife (6-3, 3.94) will make the start in the series opener for Portland, while Eddie Gamboa (3-4, 2.93) will get the call for Bowie.
