METS POUND ON SEA DOGS

Home runs were the story of Tuesday night's game at Hadlock Field, as the Binghamton Mets went deep three times in a 15-3 win over the Portland Sea Dogs. Kirk Nieuwenheis led the offensive attack for Binghamton, going 5-for-6 with a three extra base hits, and four RBI.

The Mets got the scoring started right out of the gates. Kirk Nieuwenheis led off the game with a single up the middle, and Nick Evans drove him in with a home run to right-center.

Ryne Miller kept Binghamton off of the scoreboard during the top of the second inning, but the visitors got one big hit in the third. After a lead-off groundout by Nick Evans, the Mets received three consecutive walks. With Zach Lutz, Lucas Duda, and DJ Wabick all on base, Jose Coronado drove a grand slam over the right field wall, giving his club a 6-0 lead. Miller finished the third inning, but was pulled before the fourth, allowing six runs, five hits, and four walks, while striking out five. The Portland right-hander suffered the loss, dropping his record to 0-1 on the season.

Control issues plagued the Mets as well, as the Sea Dogs got their first run in the bottom of the fourth. Nate Spears was hit by a pitch to start the frame, and three batters later, Ray Chang knocked him in with a single to right field. Portland's offensive output continued in the fifth, when Luis Exposito picked up a two-run double to left field.

As the game progressed, Binghamton salted away the win, closing out the Sea Dogs, 15-3.

Scott Shaw (2-0) was the winning pitcher for the Mets, going five innings, allowing three runs, four hits, and four walks, while striking out two.

For Portland, Nate Spears became the seventh different position player to pitch in a game with the Sea Dogs. In one inning, Spears allowed three runs on two hits, while walking one.

The Sea Dogs and Mets will conclude their three-game series on Wednesday afternoon at 12:00. Kyle Weiland (0-1, 5.40) will make his third start of the season for Portland, opposed by Binghamton's Mike Antonini (1-1, 7.27)
