Sea Dogs beat up on Earl and Fisher Cats 7 - 4

The Portland Sea Dogs were able to battle not only the elements, but also two deficits to come away with a 7-4 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats before 4,025 fans.

Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Portland rallied to score four runs in the inning, the first coming on a Nate Spears sacrifice fly to tie the game at two.

Anthony Rizzo broke the tie one batter later with an RBI double to right.  The next batter, Luis Exposito provided Portland with a little cushion when he smacked a two run double to make it a 7-4 game.

Portland starter Kyle Weiland endured a rough top half of the first, in which he allowed three runs on four hits.  David Cooper contributed an RBI single to bring home the game’s first run, before Adam Loewen produced a two-run single to give New Hampshire the early 3-0 lead.


After working through the first, Weiland would settle in to throw four scoreless innings.  Overall, he went five innings, and allowed three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out five.

Portland scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the score at one.  Ryan Khoury led the off frame with a single to left field and advanced to third on a single by Che-Hsuan Lin.  Khoury scored the first Portland run on a sacrifice fly to deep left by Jose Iglesias.

Later in the inning, Ryan Lavarnway delivered a two-run single, scoring Lin and Spears to tie the game at three.

New Hampshire regained the lead at 4-3 in the top half of the seventh on a Darin Mastroianni sacrifice fly.

Ryne Reynoso (3-0) put together an excellent relief outing, working four strong innings on one run and two hits to notch the win.

Boomer Potts (2-2) suffers the loss for New Hampshire, he went two innings and allowed four runs on four hits; he walked a man and struck out two.

The Sea Dogs (67-71) and Fisher Cats (79-59) will play game two of their four-game series tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. at Hadlock Field.  Jeremy Kehrt (5-9, 4.60) will be on the hill for Portland opposite New Hampshire’s Randy Boone (5-9, 3.81).
