OFFICIAL PORTLAND SEA DOGS GAME WRAP
The Binghamton Mets scored once in the first, twice in the second, and three times in the third on Wednesday night to defeat the Portland Sea Dogs 6-5 at Hadlock Field.
The six runs in the first three innings proved to be just enough for the B-Mets despite the Portland bullpen working 7.0 scoreless innings while the offense battled to score three runs in the final three innings to close within a run.
Binghamton jumped on top early after Josh Satin hit a solo shot over the Maine Monster in the first to give the B-Mets a 1-0 lead.
The lead would grow to three for the B-Mets after they struck for two more runs in the second. Portland starter Alex Wilson lost a bit of his command and found himself with the bases loaded with one out thanks to a double, a walk, and a hit batsman.
The next batter, Jose Coronado would then single in a run before Jordany Valdespin knocked in another on a sacrifice fly to center to give Binghamton a 3-0 lead.
Portland would come up with a run in the bottom half of the second on a two out infield single by Jorge Padron that scored Nate Spears.
Binghamton would answer back with three more runs in the third as walks proved to come back to haunt Wilson. With two runners aboard via the walk, Saloman Manriquez connected for his second home run of the season, a three run shot, to extend the lead to 6-1.
Wilson (3-5) was lifted after just 3.0 innings of work. He allowed six runs on five hits; he walked three and struck out three.
In the bottom of the fourth, Binghamton starter Dylan Owen ran in to a few control issues of his own as he walked Ryan Lavarnway and Spears to start the inning. Owen’s defense was not much help as Eric Campell’s throwing error on a Luis Exposito groundball allowed Lavarnway to come around and score to bring Portland to within 6-2.
Portland would continue to claw their way back into the game with a run in the seventh to make it a 6-3 ballgame when Lavarnway delivered a two out single to bring home Che-Hsuan Lin.
The resilient bats would return again in the bottom of the eighth. With runners of second and third with one out, Juan Carlos Linares laced a double down the right field line to drive in two runs.
Binghamton’s once comfortable 6-1 lead had evaporated to 6-5, but Manuel Alvarez would be called upon to save it for the B-Mets. With Linares on second, Alvarez was able to induce a ground out to short before striking out Jose Iglesias to end the threat.
Mitch Herold was stellar for Portland in relief of Wilson and enjoyed a season-high 4.0 innings of scoreless work and allowed just two hits while striking out three. Eammon Portice added two perfect innings to complete a stellar night for a Sea Dog’s bullpen that has not allowed a run in 13.1 innings since Aug. 29 at New Hampshire.
Erik Turgeon collected the win for Binghamton, after coming in relief of Owen with two outs in the fifth inning. Turgeon (1-0) worked 2.0 innings and allowed one run on one hit; he walked a batter and struck out three.
After cleaning up the mess in the eighth, Alvarez came on in the ninth to collect his eighth save of the season.
Despite Wednesday’s loss, the Sea Dogs (65-71) can still take the series with a win in the fourth and final game with the B-Mets (65-71) on Thursday night at 6 p.m. from Hadlock Field. Portland’s emerging ace Blake Maxwell (6-0, 2.32) will take the ball for the home team, while the Binghamton starter has yet to be announced.
NOTES: The paid attendance for tonight’s game was 4,095...Ryan Lavarnway’s RBI single in the seventh gives him 96 total RBI on the season to lead all Red Sox farm hands.
