The Portland Sea Dogs, Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, have announced 24 year-old pitcher Alex Wilson as the opening day starter. The right-hander will take the mound for the 2011 season opener on Thursday, April 7th at 6:00 PM against the Reading Phillies (Philadelphia Phillies) at Hadlock Field. The Sea Dogs start the season with a seven game homestand, April 7th- April 13, against Reading and the Trenton Thunder (New York Yankees).

Baseball America also rates Wilson as having the "Best Slider" in the farm system. He was selected in the 2nd round of the 2009 First-year Player Draft by Boston out of Texas A&M. In 2008, Wilson was picked by the Chicago Cubs in the 10th round, returned to college for his junior year.

Reading right-hander Josh Zeid is scheduled pitch for the Phillies on opening night against Wilson. After Wilson, Portland will pitch right-handers Brock Huntzinger, Stolmy Pimentel, and Stephen Fife to round out the Sea Dogs rotation. Huntzinger recorded a 7-8 record with Salem in the Carolina League in 2010. 21 year-old Pimentel, the 6th ranked prospect in the organization, will get the ball in game three. Fife, an Eastern League All Star with the Sea Dogs in 2010, will pitch the final game of the series.
