New Britain Rock Cats starter Kyle Gibson is the Minnesota Twins #3 prospect, and Thursday at Hadlock Field proved exactly why. Gibson went 7 innings, giving up only 4 hits, 3 of those to MLB talent, 2 by Jacoby Ellsbury and 1 by Mike Cameron. Cameron and Ellsbury both sang praises. "He had pretty good command" Cameron said, "low 90's in velocity..to see that here from a young kid is really good." Ellsbury added "He had 3 pretty good pitches..that he mixed up in spots"
Ellsbury, rehabbing from broken ribs, looks better and better with each game. Today he went 3 - 4 with a double and a stolen base. Cameron on the other hand went 1 - 4 with a double. Cameron said "I'm really close." When asked if was close to 100% he said "never 100% in baseball..but 90s(%) yeah, real close." Ellsbury said his biggest hurdle remains feeling comfortable in his own body.

Jacoby Ellsbury picked up three hits and one run, while Mike Cameron had a run, a hit, and an RBI, as both players made rehab appearances from the Boston Red Sox. Unfortunately for the Portland Sea Dogs, that would not be enough, as New Britain starter Kyle Gibson was on his game. Gibson limited the Sea Dogs to two runs in seven innings, as the Rock Cats won 6-2 at Hadlock Field.
The Rock Cats wasted little time in getting on the board. Ben Revere led off the ball game with a walk, and promptly stole second base. After a strikeout by Brandon Roberts, Rene Tosoni doubled to center, scoring Revere with the first run of the afternoon. Erik Lis followed with a base hit, before Juan Portes knocked in Tosoni with a single to right.
Sea Dogs' starter Kyle Weiland finished the first inning without any further damage, but ran into trouble in the top of the fifth. Ben Revere and Brandon Roberts started the frame with consecutive singles. Revere advanced to third on Roberts' hit, allowing for an easy run, when Rene Tosoni grounded out to second. Erik Lis was the next batter up, and he proceeded to launch a two-run homer into the last row of the U.S. Cellular Pavilion in right field.
Weiland (0-3) finished his outing after five innings, allowing five runs, seven hits, and two walks, while striking out four. With the two runs in the first inning, Weiland's scoreless innings streak came to an end at 14.
On the other side of the ledger, rookie Kyle Gibson was spectacular in his second start in Double-A for New Britain. Gibson held the Sea Dogs to one hit through the first five innings, allowing a double to Jacoby Ellsbury in the bottom of the first. In the sixth inning, Portland got to the Rock Cats' starter for a pair of runs. Ellsbury started the rally with an infield single, and immediately swiped second base. Mike Cameron picked up his first hit in a Sea Dogs' uniform, driving home Ellsbury with a double to right field. After Ryan Kalish grounded out, Luis Exposito brought Cameron in with a single to left.
Gibson (2-0) completed his day with seven innings pitched, allowing two runs, four hits, and one walk, while striking out six.
New Britain added one more run in the seventh off of Santo Luis, before Jason Rice finished the game with two scoreless innings out of the Portland bullpen. Michael Allen and Loek Van Mil kept the Sea Dogs off of the scoreboard in the eighth and ninth, as the Rock Cats secured the 6-2 win.
At 7-foot-1, Van Mil is the tallest player in professional baseball, while Rock Cats' shortstop Chris Cates is the smallest player in professional baseball, standing 5-foot-3.
With the Rock Cats leaving town, the Sea Dogs will begin a new series on Friday, as the Trenton Thunder will visit for four games in three days. Friday's series opener begins at 6:00, with Casey Kelly (0-3, 3.20) taking on Hector Noesi (Double-A Debut).
