PORTLAND SEA DOGS OFFICIAL GAME WRAP
Power was the name of the game for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Thursday night. Adam Calderone (2) and Brad Emaus both went deep, as the Fisher Cats defeated the Portland Sea Dogs 9-2 at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium.

The Fisher Cats wasted little time in jumping on Sea Dogs' starter Ryne Miller. After Darin Mastroianni led off with a fly out, Adam Calderone put the home team ahead, launching a towering home run to right field. Two batters later, Brad Emaus added to the lead, hitting a two-run homer for a 3-0 New Hampshire advantage.

Miller settled down, keeping the Fisher Cats off of the scoreboard in the second and third innings, but in the fourth, more trouble was presented. New Hampshire's first four batters of the frame all reached base, with Brian Jeroloman and Darin Mastroianni each picking up RBI. However, the biggest hit of the inning came when Adam Calderone went deep for the second time in three at bats.

When the fourth inning ended, so did Ryne Miller's day on the mound. The Portland starter completed his outing, allowing seven runs, eight hits, and three walks. Miller (1-2) suffered his first loss since April 20th against Binghamton.

On the other side, Bobby Bell had a great start for New Hampshire. Bell (3-2) earned the win, tossing seven innings, allowing two runs, six hits, and one walk, while striking out four. The only blemish for the Fisher Cats' starter came in the top of the fifth, when Che-Hsuan Lin lined a two-run shot over the left field wall.

Santo Luis pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the Sea Dogs, but the offense was unable to recover. The Fisher Cats tacked on two more runs off of Robert Coello, as they picked up a 9-2 win in the series opener.

Portland and New Hampshire will play game two of this four-game series on Friday night at 7:05. Kyle Weiland (0-2, 5.48) will get the start for the Sea Dogs, and will be opposed by the Fisher Cats' Luis Perez (3-2, 3.08).

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

SALEM RED SOX UPDATES

The Frederick Keys scored four runs in the sixth and two in the seventh en route to an 8-4 victory over the Salem Red Sox at Lewis-Gale Field on Thursday night. The win was the Keys third of the series and fifth of the year against Salem in seven games.

As had been the case for most of the series, the Keys jumped up on Salem early with runs in the second and fourth inning. However, the Sox cut the 2-0 lead in half with one of their own in the fourth on a stolen base by Drew Hedman, who then scored on two throwing errors by the catcher and center fielder.

Salem used the momentum from Hedman's base running to take the lead from Frederick in the fifth. Oscar Tejeda led off the inning with a triple off starter Cole McCurry, who then gave way to reliever Raul Rivero. Ryan Lavarnway singled off Rivero to drive in Tejeda, and Tim Federowicz singled to load the bases. Rivero then issued bases loaded walks to Alex Hassan and Ryan Dent to give Salem its first lead of the game at 4-2.

The Keys responded with four of their own in the top of the sixth inning off reliever Michael Lee. Frederick recorded four hits in the frame, along with a walk to scratch across four runs. The inning was highlighted by a beautifully executed squeeze bunt by catcher Luis Bernardo to score Jacob Julius and extend the Key lead to 6-4.

Salem seemed poised for another comeback in the bottom half of the sixth inning, but the Sox left the bases loaded for the third time in the game. The Sox ended up stranding 13 runners on base on the evening.

Frederick extended its lead in the seventh off of Salem reliever Kyle Fernandes. After Greg Miclat laced a double to center field, right fielder Ronnie Welty drove a double of his own down the left field line to increase the lead to three. Welty later scored on a double play groundout by LJ Hoes to make it 8-4.

The Sox didn't manage a hit in the final three innings, as relievers Jose Duran and Brian Cooney only yielded two baserunners.

Starter Caleb Clay was solid for Salem, going five innings, giving up two runs on three hits and striking out five, including a dominating first inning in which he K'd the side. Lee (2-3) was given the loss after getting tagged for four runs in one inning of work.

Rivero (2-1) picked up the win for Frederick, giving up a run on three hits in his one inning on the mound. The Keys pitching staff struck out 11 Sox batters on the night, while walking eight.

First baseman Joe Mahoney had a huge game at the plate, notching four hits in five appearances, including two doubles. Tejeda and Will Middlebrooks both recorded a triple as part of their respective two-hit games.

The Sox now hit the road for seven straight with trips to Myrtle Beach and Kinston. First pitch at BB&T Coastal field against the Pelicans is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Friday. Salem starter Alex Wilson will be opposed by Myrtle Beach's Randall Delgado.
