The Portland Sea Dogs scored one run in the top of the first inning, and as it turned out, that proved to be enough. Jeremy Kehrt, Eammon Portice, and Jason Rice combined to blank the Erie SeaWolves, as Portland completed a three-game sweep with a 1-0 win at Jerry Uht Park.
Nate Spears led off the game for the Sea Dogs, and appeared to be on his way to popping out. However, an error by Erie catcher Andy Bouchie kept the at-bat alive, with Spears ultimately drawing a walk. After a single by Che-Hsuan Lin and a flyout by Ray Chang, Luis Exposito knocked in Spears with a base hit up the middle. The RBI was Exposito's 45th of the season - the most on the team.
In the bottom of the second inning, Jeremy Kehrt faced one of his toughest jams, hitting Michael Bertram, and allowing Audy Ciriaco to reach base on an error. However, the Portland starter got Deik Scram and Andy Bouchie to ground out, ending the threat. Kehrt allowed single hits in each of the next three innings, before a hitless sixth inning ended his night on the hill. For the game, Kehrt (1-1) allowed three hits and one walk, earning his first win as a Sea Dog.
After allowing the unearned run in the first, Erie's Thad Weber settled down for a tremendous outing as well. Weber lasted eight innings for the SeaWolves, allowing seven hits and two walks, while striking out two. However, thanks to Portland's shutout, Weber (3-7) was the losing pitcher.
Eammon Portice picked up his third hold of the campaign, tossing two scoreless innings. In the bottom of the ninth, Jason Rice took over, and after back-to-back strikeouts, Cesar Nicolas launched a double off of the left field wall. Michael Bertram followed with a walk, but that was as close as Erie would get, as Audy Ciriaco struck out looking to end the ball game. Rice earned his seventh save with the scoreless ninth.
Streaks will collide on Friday night, as the Sea Dogs (three straight wins) will travel to Akron, beginning a three-game series with the Aeros (ten straight wins). Casey Kelly (1-3, 4.57) gets the call for Portland, while Akron turns to Kelvin De La Cruz (1-3, 6.28). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
