NEWEST SEA DOG, RYAN LAVARNWAY |
The Portland Sea Dogs returned home on a tear, winning the last 5 games. Part of the reason is new call up, catcher Ryan Lavarnway. In his first five road games with the Sea Dogs, Lavarnway has 11 RBI.
He didn't dissapoint Dogs fans at home Thursday, going 3-5 with 3 RBI. He started his night with the game tying RBI single in the 4th inning. Continued in the 6th, plating Luis Exposito on a single off reliever Zach Dials and completed his night by plating Exposito again, this time with a 2 out double deep to centerfield for his 3rd RBI. Lavarnway is now 12-27 for a .444 AVG and 14 RBI.
On the mound for the Sea Dogs was hard throwing Alex Wilson. Wilson (2-2, 5.89 ERA) had it going early mixing his fastball and slider to get out of the 1st inning allowing one runner by hitting Jesus Valdez on a 1-2
count.
Wilson went 5 2/3 allowing 1 run on a sharp RBI double in the 2nd by the Senators Ailieo Castro. Wilson finished with 3 Ks, 3 hits and 1 walk in his stint.
All Star Nate Spears then put the Sea Dogs ahead in the 5th with his 11th blast of the season. Spears took a fastball and put it just right of the Sea Dogs bullpen.
The Dogs broke the game open in the 6th, all starting with Luis Exposito's 2nd hit of the night. After an Anthony Rizzo single and Yamaico Navarro forcing Rizzo at 2nd, Lavarnway plated Expo with the single. Chih-Hsein Chiang then doubled home Navarro and moved Lavarnway to 3rd. Matt Sheely closed out the scoring in the 6th, hitting a sac fly to score Lavarnway.
The Dogs offense erupted again in the 7th with the Lavarnway double and A Chih-Hsien Chiang 2 run home run. Chiang finished the game 2 - 4 with 3 RBI.
The Sea Dogs bullpen took things over from there getting solid performances from Eammon Portice and Bryce Cox, allowing only 2 more hits to Harrisburg the rest of the way. Portice went 2 1/3 innings allowing 2 hits and Cox closed it out going 1 inning allowing 1 hit.
The Sea Dogs play game 2 of the 4 game series against Harrisburg Friday night at 7PM when Sea Dogs All Star Stephen Fife faces Nationals Jason Marquis. Red Sox fans will remember Marquis as the Game 4 loser of the 2004 Red Sox World Series clincher. Game time is 7PM.
