SEA DOGS LOSE IN THE 9TH 6 - 4 #portlandseadogs #redsox

OFFICIAL PORTLAND SEA DOGS GAME WRAP
At one point during Friday night's game, the Portland Sea Dogs had a 4-1 lead. However, the host New Britain Rock Cats had the final say, scoring five unanswered runs for a 6-4 win at New Britain Stadium. The winning runs were scored in the bottom of the tenth, when Jair Fernandez hit a two-run blast off of reliever Bryce Cox.

Portland starter Casey Kelly got off to an interesting start in the first inning, allowing three hits and a walk. However, a flyout, a pick off, and a caught stealing left the game scoreless after one. One inning later, the Rock Cats got on the board. Steve Singleton led off with a double, and advanced to third on a single by Alexander Soto. Mark Dolenc grounded to third for the first out of the frame, but was able to drive in Singleton.

New Britain's lead didn't last long, as the Sea Dogs came back with three runs in the top of the third. Chih-Hsien Chiang started the rally by reaching on a two-base error by Chris Parmelee. Ryan Khoury followed with a walk, before both runners advanced on a wild pitch. That set the table for Che-Hsuan Lin, who tripled to left field for a 2-1 Portland lead. Lin's stay at third base was a short one, as Jeremy Hermida picked up his first RBI with Portland on a grounder to short.

The score stayed that way until the sixth, when the two teams exchanged single runs. In the top half of the inning, Portland got consecutive hits from Luis Exposito (double) and Anthony Rizzo (single), before Ryan Lavarnway grounded into a double play. Lavarnway didn't get an RBI, but Exposito scored the Sea Dogs' fourth run of the game. In the bottom half of the frame, Joe Benson smacked a solo home run, cutting Portland's lead to 4-2. For Benson, it was his fourth home run of the season against the Sea Dogs.

Both starting pitchers saw their outings come to an end after the sixth. Casey Kelly allowed two runs, eight hits, and two walks, while striking out five for Portland. Mike McCardell allowed four runs (three earned), five hits, and three walks, while striking out two.

The two starters were in line for decisions, but that changed in the bottom of the seventh. Mark Dolenc led off with a double, and Ben Revere was hit by a pitch, putting two men on with one out. Juan Portes singled up the middle to score Dolenc, and two batters later, Erik Lis knocked in Revere with a single to right, tying the game at four.

The deadlock was eventually broken in the bottom of the tenth. Joe Benson led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Steve Singleton, and around to third on a wild pitch. The New Britain right fielder didn't have to run very hard to reach the plate, as Jair Fernandez crushed a two-run homer to left, ending the ball game with a 6-4 win for the Rock Cats.

Former Sea Dog Chris Province (5-1) earned his third straight win over Portland with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen for New Britain. Bryce Cox (1-5) suffered the loss, allowing two runs in one and one-third innings.

The Sea Dogs and Rock Cats will play game three of their four-game series on Saturday night at 7:05. Alex Wilson (1-2, 6.53) will make the start for Portland, while New Britain will turn to Deolis Guerra (2-4, 3.44).
