OFFICIAL PORTLAND SEA DOGS GAME WRAP
The Portland Sea Dogs fell behind 3-1 in the fourth inning, but scored the night's last four runs, as they opened a five-game series with a 5-3 win over the Binghamton Mets. Portland took the lead in the seventh, scoring on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Che-Hsuan Lin.
In the bottom of the first, the Mets needed little time to take the lead. After Kirk Nieuwenhuis grounded out, Sean Ratliff hit a solo home run. Nick Evans and Marshall Hubbard followed with consecutive singles, but Casey Kelly induced a double play to end the inning.
The Sea Dogs responded with the tying run in the second. Luis Exposito started the frame with an infield hit, before Anthony Rizzo was hit by a pitch. Yamaico Navarro then hit a ground ball to short, forcing out Rizzo at second base, but the throw to first was wild, allowing Exposito to score.
Binghamton regained the lead in the third. With one out, Kirk Nieuwenhuis walked and Sean Ratliff singled. With two men on, Nick Evans singled to right, bringing home Nieuwenhuis with the go-ahead run. One inning later, Raul Reyes put the home team ahead by two, blasting a home run off of the video board in right field.
Visiting Portland was resilient once again, evening the score in the top of the fifth. With one out, Matt Sheely struck out, but reached base on a passed ball by Salomon Manriquez. Sheely then stole second base, before cruising home on Che-Hsuan Lin's RBI triple. The next batter up was Nate Spears, who flew out to the warning track in right field, scoring Lin with the tying run.
Both starting pitchers received no-decisions, as the game stayed scoreless into the late frames. Casey Kelly went five and two-thirds innings for Portland, allowing three runs, seven hits, and four walks, while striking out two. On the other side of the ledger, Mark Cohoon tossed five innings for Binghamton, allowing three runs (one earned) and five hits, while striking out three.
The deadlock was broken in the seventh, as the Sea Dogs picked up a pair of runs against reliever Eddie Kunz. Ryan Khoury struck out to start the inning, but a walk to Will Vazquez and a hit by pitch on Matt Sheely quickly put Portland in business. Back-to-back wild pitches scored Vazquez with the go-ahead run, and an RBI single by Che-Hsuan Lin scored Sheely.
Mitch Herold (2-2) pitched one and two-thirds scoreless innings for the Sea Dogs, earning the win. Eddie Kunz (5-5) suffered the loss, allowing two runs in one and one-third innings. Bryce Cox finished the game with two scoreless innings for his tenth save of the season.
The Sea Dogs and Mets will play a doubleheader on Friday night, with the first game scheduled for 5:35. Alex Wilson (0-1, 6.28) will face Chris Schwinden (3-5, 5.35) in the opener. Neither team has named a starting pitcher for game two.
