Bates College Names Former Sea Dogs Catcher as Manager

Mike Leonard, a former Boston Red Sox minor leaguer and All-Big East collegiate career at the University of Connecticut, has been appointed as head baseball coach at Bates College.

Leonard, who served as head baseball coach at Elms College in 2010, takes over a Bates team that went went 25-11 in 2010 to break the team record for wins. The Bobcats return all but one starter from the 2010 season.

"I'm thrilled to become the head baseball coach at Bates College," Leonard said. "This program has been moving in an outstanding direction, and I look forward to taking it to an even higher level."

Leonard was drafted by the Red Sox following an All-Big East career at the University of Connecticut, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in political science in 2004. He spent four years as a catcher in the Red Sox minor league system, including two months with the Double A Portland Sea Dogs. He concluded his professional career in 2009 as a player-coach under former Red Sox catcher Rich Gedman with the Worcester Tornadoes of the independent Can-Am League.

"We are very pleased and excited about Mike's appointment," said Bates Director of Athletics Kevin McHugh. "He is the person best suited to continue the arc of success that has been established with Bates baseball."

McHugh said he was impressed by Leonard’s coaching philosophy and his plan for the team's future, which combines “a unique blend” of the influences of some of his former coaches, such as his two head coaches at Connecticut, Andy Baylock and Jim Penders, and Red Sox major league coaching assistant Rob Leary, a former minor league instructor for the organization. McHugh also cited Leonard’s playing background, his coaching experience and “the unique and highly applicable lessons that he learned while playing professionally."

Leonard began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach at St. Lawrence University in 2008 and 2009, with primary responsibilities for pitchers, catchers, hitters and strength and conditioning. At St. Lawrence he earned a master of education degree in 2009.

Appointed head coach at Elms College in 2010, he led the Blazers to a 10-22 record. Leonard also instituted the "Blazer Buddies" after-school mentor program that served 15 elementary school children.

Leonard will assume his duties on Nov. 19. He replaces Bates head coach Edwin Thompson, who resigned in September to accept an assistant coach position at Duke University. Thompson led the Bobcats to a 12-22 record in 2009, his first year at Bates, then headed the remarkable 25-11 turnaround in 2010. Eight starters from the team will return for 2011, including three All-NESCAC players in seniors Chris Burke (North Andover, Mass.), Noah Lynd (Meriden, N.H.) and Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.).

"I know that Bates, the athletic department and Kevin McHugh are committed to the same kind of athletic and academic excellence that I am," said Leonard. "I really look forward to being one piece of that."

A four-year starting catcher for Division I Connecticut, Leonard was an All-Big East selection in 2002 and 2003, and he remains on the Huskies' top-15 career lists in hits (205), runs batted in (118), at bats (648) and games played (177). He was a team captain, a Dee Rowe Athletic Scholarship winner and a Big East Academic All-Conference honoree. During his college years he played with the Harwich Mariners in the Cape Cod Baseball League. Leonard starred at Rockville (Conn.) High School, and was named Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year and The Hartford Courant Player of the Year.

During his stint with the Red Sox, he played for the Gulf Coast League Red Sox, the Lowell Spinners, and the Greenville Drive before reaching Portland. While with the Spinners in 2005, Leonard competed alongside such future major league players as Jed Lowrie, Clay Buchholz and Jacoby Ellsbury.

Ryan Lavarnway latest Sea Dog player to shine in AFL

Ryan Lavarnway's 3 Run HR plate Jose Iglesias (Jordan Megenhardt/MLB.com)

In a game in which Peoria couldn't lose, Ryan Lavarnway at least attempted to provide an edge.

The Red Sox catching prospect hit a three-run homer in the third inning and finished 2-for-4 as his visiting Peoria Javelinas settled for a 4-4, 11-inning tie with the Peoria Saguaros on Thursday afternoon.

"You're always trying for that victory," Lavarnway said. "Ties aren't something we're used to, but we played a good game."

A tie isn't uncommon in the Arizona Fall League, which stipulates knotted games be called after 11 innings. The clutch homer from Lavarnway also wasn't uncommon in 2010 -- the catcher had 22 longballs and 102 RBIs in the regular season between two Minor League levels. His go-ahead shot gave the Javs a 4-1 edge, but Ben Revere (Twins) scored on a fielding error by center fielder Jay Austin (Astros) in the eighth to tie it up for the Sags.

The Portland Sea Dogs wore uniforms of the 1926 Portland Eskimos today, but they played like they wanted to be members of the 2011 Boston Red Sox, beating the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 9 - 2 at Hadlock on Sunday.

Stephen Fife started the game for the Sea Dogs, while Clint Everts took the bump for the Cats.

Fife ran into trouble first, allowing the first four batters of the 2nd to reach on 2 walks and 2 singles. Fife got things set in the right direction by getting the Cats Jonathan Jaspe to ground into a double play, allowing the second run to score. Fife got the Cats Callix Crabbe to line to SS Nate Spears to end the inning. That was the last run Sea Dogs pitching would allow the rest of the way as Fife, Mitch Herold and Jason Rice combine for a 4 hit Sea Dogs victory.

The Sea Dogs offense got going in the 2nd as Anthony Rizzo walked to open the stanza. After a Luis Exposito strikeout, Jorge Padron singled to move Rizzo to second. Everts then walked two of the next 3 batters, Ryan Khoury and Che-Hsuan Lin, scoring Rizzo to close the gap to 2 -1 New Hampshire.

Walking was the way of the day for the Sea Dogs as New Hampshire pitchers allowed 11 free passes.

Nate Spears opened the 3rd with yet another walk. Ryan Lavarnway then hit a deep shot to right that Fisher Cats LF Ricardo Nanita played off the Maine Monster, moving Spears to 3rd. Anthony Rizzo plated Spears with a shot to right that Adam Loewen seem to lose in the sun. The Fisher Cats escaped the inning with allowing only the one run, score tied at 2 after 3.

Spears scoring gave him 100 on the season, making him only the 3rd Sea Dog in franchise history to score 100 runs in a season. Spears joins Ralph Milliard (104, 1995) and Mark Kotsay (103, 1997) to reach the 100 run mark.

The Sea Dogs took the lead for good in the 5th. Anthony Rizzo singled and promtly stole 2nd, putting him in scoring position. Ryan Khoury got the first of his two RBI on the day by doubling Rizzo in.

The Dogs got more in the 6th inning as Nate Spears scored his 101st run of the year on a 2 run shot into the US Cellular Pavilion. Che-Hsuan Lin scored ahead of Spears after an inning lead off walk. Spears HR made the game 5-2 after 6.

Walks again did New Hampshire in, allowing 3 in the 7th, leading to the Dogs scoreing 4 runs. Singles by Lavarnway and Khoury plated 3, while Nate Spears walked with the bases loaded to score Khoury. That closed out the scoring, as the Sea Dogs take it 9 - 2.

The Sea Dogs play their last game of the season tomorrow at Hadlock for a 1PM start. Team Awards are handed out prior to the game, so get there early!

OFFICIAL SEA DOGS GAME WRAP
The Portland Sea Dogs were able to battle not only the elements, but also two deficits to come away with a 7-4 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats before 4,025 fans.

Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Portland rallied to score four runs in the inning, the first coming on a Nate Spears sacrifice fly to tie the game at two.

Anthony Rizzo broke the tie one batter later with an RBI double to right.  The next batter, Luis Exposito provided Portland with a little cushion when he smacked a two run double to make it a 7-4 game.

Portland starter Kyle Weiland endured a rough top half of the first, in which he allowed three runs on four hits.  David Cooper contributed an RBI single to bring home the game’s first run, before Adam Loewen produced a two-run single to give New Hampshire the early 3-0 lead.

Sea Dogs drop 5-3 decision to Binghamton.

OFFICIAL SEA DOGS GAME WRAP
Juan Carlos Linares hit his first professional home run as the Portland Sea Dogs defeated the Binghamton Mets 5-3 Thursday evening at Hadlock Field before 6,252 fans.  The Sea Dogs (66-71) take three out four from the Mets (65-72) and the season series 11 games to nine.

Jorge Padron hit a two run double in the bottom of the third scoring Nate Spears and Luis Exposito to give the Sea Dogs a 2-1 lead.

Binghamton came right back with two runs in the top of the fourth with a two run homer off the bat of Raul Reyes giving the lead back to Binghamton 3-2.

The Binghamton lead was short lived as well, as in the bottom half of the fourth Linares homered to tie the game at three.  A Nate Spears sacrifice fly scoring Che-Hsuan Lin gave Portland the 4-3 lead and they never looked back.  Linares would add a RBI single in the fifth to cap the Portland scoring.

Blake Maxwell improved to 7-0 with the Sea Dogs and 10-1 on the season with stops in Single-A Salem, Double-A Portland, and Triple-A Pawtucket.  Maxwell tossed 5.2 innings allowing three runs on nine hits.  Maxwell walked one batter and struck out four.

OFFICIAL PORTLAND SEA DOGS GAME WRAP
The Binghamton Mets scored once in the first, twice in the second, and three times in the third on Wednesday night to defeat the Portland Sea Dogs 6-5 at Hadlock Field.

The six runs in the first three innings proved to be just enough for the B-Mets despite the Portland bullpen working 7.0 scoreless innings while the offense battled to score three runs in the final three innings to close within a run.

Binghamton jumped on top early after Josh Satin hit a solo shot over the Maine Monster in the first to give the B-Mets a 1-0 lead.

Fife Spins a Gem at Hadlock

Stephen Fife has had his troubles in the early innings as of late, but on Tuesday night against the Binghamton Mets, the righty had no early troubles, and almost no trouble at all as he did not allow a hit through his first 5.1 innings of work in the Portland Sea Dogs’ 6-0 win at Hadlock Field.

Portland took a two run lead before Binghamton starter Eric Beaulac could record an out. After a single by Nate Spears and a walk to Che-Hsuan Lin, Anthony Rizzo ripped a two run double down the right field line to plate Spears and Lin and build upon his record for RBI in a month with 32.

Even their first out was productive, as Ryne Lavarnway’s sac fly to center field brought home Rizzo who had advanced to third earlier on a wild pitch, 3-0 Portland.

Portland would extend their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second when Will Vazquez hit his first Double-A homerun.

All the while, Fife kept throwing blanks as he faced the minimum amount of batters (16) through his first 5.1 innings of work. He did hit Sean Ratliff with a pitch in the second inning, however Fife was able to induce a ground ball for a double play to the very next batter, and promptly retire the next 11 B-Mets batters he faced in order.

With one out in the sixth inning, Raul Reyes would break up the no-hit bid with a single up the middle. After a strikeout to Luke Montz and an infield hit by Jose Coronado, Fife would strikeout Jordany Valdespin to end the threat and put a punctuation mark on his finest outing of the season.

Fife (7-6) went 6.0 innings and allowed just the two hits and struck out five to collect his first win since July 18th at New Britain; a game in which he also only allowed two hits in 6.0 innings of work.

Lavarnway and Luis Exposito went back-to-back in the fifth inning with a pair of solo shots that gave Portland the 6-0 lead that would hold to be the final.

Beaulac (0-2) would pick up the loss and became a distant memory by the time this game finished as he worked just 1.0 inning and allowed three runs on two hits and a walk.

Ryne Lawson continued his stellar work out of the bullpen and collected his second save of the season working the final three innings and allowed just one hit while striking out four.

The Sea Dogs (65-70) and B-Mets (64-71) will continue their series tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Hadlock Field. Alex Wilson (3-4, 6.14) will take the ball for Portland opposite Dylan Owen (4-4, 4.38). The Sea Dogs will be honoring Daniel Bard, with a bobblehead night in his honor. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive Daniel Bard bobblehead dolls courtesy of Delta Dental.

NOTES: The paid attendance was 4,572…Montz and manager Tim Teufel were ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the sixth inning…Both of Lawson’s saves this season have come against the B-Mets…Lavarnway’s homer in the fifth gave him 95 RBI this season between Single-A Salem and Portland to lead all Red Sox Farm Hands…He is followed by Rizzo (94) and Exposito (90)

Sea Dogs Take one from the B-Mets

The Portland Sea Dogs kicked off their final homestand of the 2010 season on the right note defeating the Binghamton Mets 7-6 Monday night at Hadlock Field before a 5,126 fans. The Sea Dogs’ win gives Portland and Binghamton identical 64-70 records for the season.

A rare double steal by the Sea Dogs would set-up the game winning run for Portland. Tied at six in the bottom of the fifth inning, Binghamton starter Robert Carson issued one out walks to Anthony Rizzo and Ryan Khoury. Rizzo and Khoury would pull-off a double steal advancing to second and third. Jorge Padron then lifted a fly ball to center-field; Rizzo tagged from third and scored what proved to be the game winning. The stolen base was Khoury’s third and Rizzo’s fourth of the season.

The Sea Dogs struck for six runs in the first two innings off Binghamton Carson (1-6), who suffers the loss. Nate Spears picked-up his 73rd RBI of the season with a RBI single scoring Jose Iglesias in the first to give the Sea Dogs a quick 1-0 lead. In the second inning, Portland exploded for five runs, the big hit a two run double by Luis Exposito collecting his team leading 88th and 89th RBI’s.

Sea Dogs starter Jeremy Kehrt cruised through the first four innings yielding only one run. However, in the fifth, the Binghamton bats came alive against Kehrt to score five runs off seven hits to tie the game at six. Zach Lutz and Marshall Hubbard provided RBI singles, Brahiam Maldonado and Salomon Manriquez chipped in with RBI doubles, and Eric Cambell added a sacrifice fly. Kehrt would not get through the inning, giving way to Ryne Reynoso who retired Jordany Valdespin to end the inning.

Reynoso (2-0) tossed 3.2 shutout innings yielding two hits to earn his second win.

Daniel Turpen pitched a scoreless ninth to notch his second save with the Sea Dogs.

Chih-Hsien Chiang had a perfect 3-for-3 night, collecting his 35th double of the season, scoring a run, and picking-up an RBI. He has now hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games.

The Sea Dogs are down to seven games in the 2010 season. On Tuesday night Stephen Fife (6-6, 5.03) will get the start for the Sea Dogs at 7:00 PM against the Binghamton Mets. Fife will be opposed by Binghamton righty Eric Beaulac (0-1, 5.40). Prior to the game the Sea Dogs will induct Mike Redmond and Bill Troubh into the Portland Sea Dogs Hall of Fame.

Sea Dogs Finish up the Road Schedule, Fall to New Hampshire

The Portland Sea Dogs and New Hampshire Fisher Cats had quite the battle going through the first six innings, with the Fisher Cats leading 2-1. However, New Hampshire blew things open in the seventh, hitting two home runs for a 6-3 win in the series finale at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium.

The Sea Dogs opened the scoring in the top of the second. Ryan Lavarnway led off with a double, and advanced to third base on a single by Ray Chang. Jorge Padron followed by grounding into a double play, but Lavarnway was able to cross home plate.

After a passed ball advanced the runners to second and third, Eric Thames grounded to short, plating Mastroianni with the go-ahead run.

The score stayed that way until the seventh, when New Hampshire added to their lead with a pair of homers. Jonathan Jaspe led off the frame with a solo shot to right field, putting the home team ahead by two. Then, with two men on and two men out, Eric Thames clobbered a three-run blast to right, making the score 6-1.

Both starting pitchers were tremendous, keeping the game scoreless through the first five innings of play. Kyle Drabek went those five innings for the Fisher Cats, allowing one hit and four walks, while striking out four.

Mitch Herold pitched two and one-third scoreless innings in relief, as the Portland Sea Dogs picked up a 5-1 win at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium.

In the second inning, the Sea Dogs opened the scoring. With one out, Chih-Hsien Chiang walked and Juan Carlos Linares doubled, putting a pair of runners in scoring position. One inning later, Harrison hit a two run homer over the Maine Monster to cap a five run second inning for the Curve. The six runs came off Portland starter Kyle Weiland. Weiland lasted only four innings surrendering six runs on four hits and yielding three walks.

Ryne Lawson (6-5) would relieve Weiland and keep Portland in the game by shutting down the Curve for three innings giving up only one hit and two walks to earn the win.

Nate Spears got the Sea Dogs comeback started with his 14th home run of the season, a two run shot into the U.S. Cellular Pavilion in the fourth off Altoona starter Bryan Morris.

Anthony Rizzo hit his first home run of the game in the sixth, a solo shot off reliever Tom Boleska to cut the lead in half; 6-3.

In the seventh, the Sea Dogs would explode for three home runs and six runs to take their first lead of the game 9-6. Ryan Lavarnway led off the inning with his third home run in a Sea Dogs uniform. The next three batters would single to load the bases. After Ray Chang was called out on strikes and Jose Iglesias popped out, Rizzo blasted his second home run of the game, a grand slam to give Portland an 8-6 lead. The home run was his team leading 18th. Luis Exposito would follow with his 10th homer of the year giving the Sea Dogs back-to-back homers for the first time since April 22nd verse Trenton when Lars Anderson and Ray Chang accomplished the feat.

Ryne Reynoso pitched the final two innings for Portland earning his first save of the season.

Boleska (1-1) suffers the loss for Altoona giving up five runs on five hits in one inning of work.

The Sea Dogs will welcome the Trenton Thunder (Yankees) to town on Friday night at 7:00 PM for a three game weekend series. Jeremy Kehrt (2-9, 4.82) gets the nod for Portland; he’ll be opposed by Trenton’s Cory Arbiso (4-2, 3.61).

Notes: Che-Hsuan Lin extended his hitting streak to a season high eight games with a seventh inning single. The six run deficit the Sea Dogs overcame was the largest this season; the previous high was four runs on August 3rd against the Bowie Baysox. Anthony Rizzo now leads the Red Sox farm system with 23 combined home runs and 87 RBI. Rizzo now has 7 home runs and 25 RBI in August, he just 4 RBI’s shy of a new franchise record for RBI’s in the month of August. For the first time this season Exposito hit in the five spot, all 109 previous games he batted clean-up. It was the first time the Sea Dogs collected five home runs in a game since July 20, 2009 at New Britain. The paid attendance was 6,173.

IGLESIAS WENT 1 - 5 IN HIS RETURN TO PORTLAND
OFFICIAL SEA DOGS GAME WRAP

Jose Iglesias made his long awaited return to the Portland lineup, however, it was not enough as the Altoona scored four unanswered runs to defeat the Sea Dogs 4-2 before 6,588 at Hadlock Field on Tuesday night.

After scoring a run in each of the first two innings, Portland saw their bats stymied by the Altoona bullpen.  The combination of Michael Colla, Anthony Claggett and Daniel Moskos held the offense scoreless and allowed just two hits over the games’ final six innings.

Iglesias went 1-for-5 in his first Double-A action since May, and looked sharp in the field as he made the start at shortstop.

JOSE IGLESIAS RETURNS FROM INJURY TONIGHT
The Portland Sea Dogs return home tonight after and long road trip, and bring a much anticipated player with them.

Jose Iglesias has been out since May 29th, when he took a fastball off the wrist in a game against the New Britain Rock Cats. Iglesias was diagnosed with a deep bone bruise and slight fracture.

Iglesias has worked with the Sea Dogs throughout most of his stint on the injured list, taking ground balls with his glove hand. Jose regularly made crazy, backhanded plays while flipping the ball to various 2nd baseman.

Iglesias started a rehab stint with the Lowell Spinners a couple weeks ago, finishing with a .350 average.

Iglesias has been a pleasant surprise at the plate, leading the Sea Dogs in hitting when he got injured.

Make sure to head down to Hadlock to see Iglesias and the rest of the Sea Dogs, as they take on the Altoona Curve at 7PM. Good seats still available as hurler Alex Wilson takes the bump for the Sea Dogs, while Tony Wilson (4 - 2, 2.81 ERA) goes for Altoona.

Sea Dogs pick up extra inning, 6-5 win over Richmond #portlandseadogs #redsox #sblog

OFFICIAL PORTLAND SEA DOGS GAME WRAP
The Portland Sea Dogs saw two leads slip away on Saturday night, but the third lead was the charm. Chih-Hsien Chiang doubled home Matt Sheely in the top of the tenth inning, and Jason Rice made it hold up in the bottom of the tenth, as Portland picked up a 6-5 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels at the Diamond.

The game got off to a rather odd start in the top half of the first. After the first out was recorded, the Sea Dogs picked up four consecutive singles. Luis Exposito's single was hit the softest, yet it produced the lone run of the frame, as Nate Spears scored from third base. Ray Chang and Anthony Rizzo also singled in the first, but both plays resulted in outs with outfield assists from Thomas Neal.

With one out in the fourth, Portland put a second run on the board. Anthony Rizzo walked, then advanced
