Sea Dogs Finish up the Road Schedule, Fall to New Hampshire

The Portland Sea Dogs and New Hampshire Fisher Cats had quite the battle going through the first six innings, with the Fisher Cats leading 2-1. However, New Hampshire blew things open in the seventh, hitting two home runs for a 6-3 win in the series finale at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium.

The Sea Dogs opened the scoring in the top of the second. Ryan Lavarnway led off with a double, and advanced to third base on a single by Ray Chang. Jorge Padron followed by grounding into a double play, but Lavarnway was able to cross home plate.

In the third inning, the Fisher Cats came back to take the lead. With one out, Luis Sanchez, Darin Mastroianni, and Adeiny Hechavarria connected on consecutive singles, with Hechavarria's hit plating Sanchez. After a passed ball advanced the runners to second and third, Eric Thames grounded to short, plating Mastroianni with the go-ahead run.

The score stayed that way until the seventh, when New Hampshire added to their lead with a pair of homers. Jonathan Jaspe led off the frame with a solo shot to right field, putting the home team ahead by two. Then, with two men on and two men out, Eric Thames clobbered a three-run blast to right, making the score 6-1.

The Sea Dogs scored a pair of runs in the ninth, despite the fact that the team was held hitless. Ryan Lavarnway's bases loaded walk plated one run, while Ray Chang's hit by pitch scored the other, as the visitors fell, 6-3.

David Purcey (1-1) got his second decision in as many days, pitching a perfect fourth inning on two strikeouts for the win. Kyle Weiland (5-9) pitched well for Portland, but suffered the loss, going five innings, allowing two runs (one earned), and six hits, while striking out three. Ronald Uviedo was brilliant in relief for New Hampshire, receiving a hold, as he went five innings, allowing two runs (one earned), one hit, and three walks, while striking out five. Alan Farina picked up his fourth save of the season, allowing one walk and one hit batsman, while striking out three.

The Sea Dogs have now concluded the road portion of their 2010 schedule, and will finish the campaign with eight straight games at Hadlock Field. The first of those games is on Monday night at 7:00 against the Binghamton Mets. Jeremy Kehrt (2-11, 4.97) will get the homestand started for Portland, while Robert Carson (1-5, 8.26) will make the start for Binghamton.
