OFFICIAL PORTLAND SEA DOGS GAME WRAP
For eight innings of Sunday night's game, the Portland Sea Dogs were in control. Nate Spears' three-run homer and Jeremy Kehrt's six scoreless innings had Portland on top 4-0, looking to secure a win. However, the Richmond Flying Squirrels came back with five runs in the bottom of the ninth, winning the series finale in walkoff fashion.
After three scoreless innings, the Sea Dogs broke through with a run in the fourth. Anthony Rizzo doubled
with one out, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Ryan Lavarnway walked, Jorge Padron singled to right field, knocking in Rizzo with the first run of the game. Lavarnway nearly scored two batters later on Chih-Hsien Chiang's single, but Clay Timpner threw him out at the plate from right field.
One inning later, Portland added to the lead. Matt Sheely and Che-Hsuan Lin started the frame with back-to-back singles, setting the table for Nate Spears. Spears took a 2-2 offering, and drove it over the right field fence for his 13th home run of the season. The Sea Dogs' second baseman now has 60 RBI, which puts him in third place on the team.
Things were looking good for the visitors, who got a phenomenal start out of Jeremy Kehrt. The righty pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and two walks, while striking out four. Eammon Portice followed Kehrt with two scoreless frames out of the Portland bullpen.
The Sea Dogs held onto that 4-0 lead until the ninth inning, when the Flying Squirrels staged their comeback. Thomas Neal walked to start the rally, before Brandon Belt was hit by a pitch. After a fielder's choice, Sharlon Schoop drove in the first run, singling to right field. Tyler LaTorre followed with an RBI single to left, putting the tying run on base. Clay Timpner then hit a ball up the middle that deflected off of Ray Chang, scoring Schoop, and knocking Bryce Cox out of the ball game. Ryne Reynoso was greeted with an RBI single by Brad Boyer, before Darren Ford's RBI gave Richmond a 5-4 walkoff victory.
Ronnie Ray (2-3) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Richmond, as he picked up the win. Bryce Cox (1-6) allowed all five runs (three earned) in one-third of an inning for Portland.
The Sea Dogs will have Monday off, before returning home on Tuesday to begin a three-game series with the Altoona Curve. Alex Wilson (3-3, 7.04) will get the homestand started for Portland, while Tony Watson (4-2, 2.81) will get the call for Altoona.
