OFFICIAL SEA DOGS GAME WRAP
The New Hampshire Fisher Cats will have to wait at least one more day to clinch a spot in the 2010 Eastern League Playoffs. With the score tied at one in the sixth, Ryan Lavarnway blasted a three-run homer to center field. Mitch Herold pitched two and one-third scoreless innings in relief, as the Portland Sea Dogs picked up a 5-1 win at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium.
The first inning of the game might have been one of the weirdest this season, as the two teams combined for four walks, four strikeouts, and 56 pitches, without a single hit falling in. In the second inning, the Sea Dogs opened the scoring. With one out, Chih-Hsien Chiang walked and Juan Carlos Linares doubled, putting a pair of runners in scoring position. Nate Spears followed with a groundout to short, but the ball was hit deep enough to score Chiang.
Alex Wilson and the Sea Dogs held onto that lead until the fifth inning, when the Fisher Cats tied the game at one. With one out, Darin Mastroianni tripled down the right field line. Adeiny Hechavarria stepped up next, and singled to right, scoring Mastroianni.
The tied score didn't last long, as Portland had an answer in the top of the sixth. Anthony Rizzo and Luis Exposito received back-to-back walks, ending BJ LaMura's start. Vince Bongiovanni replaced LaMura, and was greeted by Ryan Lavarnway, who smashed a three-run homer to center field. The home run was Lavarnway's fourth in five games on the road trip, and his second in as many days.
The visitors added one more run in the ninth, when Chih-Hsien Chiang greeted Dumas Garcia with his 11th home run of the season.
Mitch Herold (3-4) earned the win for the Sea Dogs, pitching two and one-third scoreless innings out of the bullpen. The lefty allowed just one hit and one walk, while striking out four. BJ LaMura (5-6) was the losing pitcher, going five-plus innings, allowing three runs, two hits, and six walks, while striking out five.
The Sea Dogs and Fisher Cats will continue their series on Saturday night at 7:05. Blake Maxwell (5-0, 2.19) will get the call for Portland, while Eastern League Pitcher of the Year Kyle Drabek (14-9, 2.85) will start for New Hampshire.
