Lavarnway hit .421 (8-for-19) with three doubles, four home runs, seven RBI, seven runs scored, nine walks and a 1.211 slugging percentage in seven games for the Sea Dogs last week. He reached based at least twice in each of the seven games he played in last week and also scored at least one run in six of those games, including going 1-for-2 with a three-run homer and two walks in a 5-1 win at New Hampshire on Friday
night. Lavarnway led all Eastern League players in home runs (4), total bases (23), extra-base hits (7), on-base percentage (.621), slugging percentage (1.211) and OPS (1.831) last week. He also tied for first in walks (9), tied for third in doubles (3) and runs scored (7), ranked fourth in batting average (.421) and tied for fifth in RBI (7).
The 23 year-old, Lavarnway, hit .289 (88-for-304) in 82 games for the Salem Red Sox this season and was selected to the 2010 Carolina League All-Star team before being promoted to Double-A Portland on July 15th. Lavarnway also earned Carolina League Player of the Week honors for the week of April 12th-18th, when he hit .462 with three homers and 15 RBI for the Salem Red Sox. In a combined 117 games this season between Single-A Salem and Double-A Portland, Lavarnway, leads all Red Sox farm hands with 93 RBI, ranks second with 21 home runs, and is sixth in hitting at .288.
Last season he led Red Sox farmhands with 21 home runs and a .540 slugging percentage at Single-A Greenville. The Woodland Hills, California native was drafted by the Red Sox in the sixth round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft and attended Yale University.
Lavarnway joins Anthony Rizzo as the only Sea Dogs to take home Eastern League Player of the Week honors this season. Rizzo captured the honors for the week of August 2nd through August 8th when he hit .444 with three home runs and 12 RBI.
The Sea Dogs begin their final homestand of the 2010 season on Monday night with a 7:00 PM game against the Binghamton Mets. The Sea Dogs 2010 campaign concludes on Monday, September 6th at 1:00 PM against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
