OFFICIAL PORTLAND SEA DOGS GAME WRAP
The Portland Sea Dogs saw two leads slip away on Saturday night, but the third lead was the charm. Chih-Hsien Chiang doubled home Matt Sheely in the top of the tenth inning, and Jason Rice made it hold up in the bottom of the tenth, as Portland picked up a 6-5 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels at the Diamond.
The game got off to a rather odd start in the top half of the first. After the first out was recorded, the Sea Dogs picked up four consecutive singles. Luis Exposito's single was hit the softest, yet it produced the lone run of the frame, as Nate Spears scored from third base. Ray Chang and Anthony Rizzo also singled in the first, but both plays resulted in outs with outfield assists from Thomas Neal.
With one out in the fourth, Portland put a second run on the board. Anthony Rizzo walked, then advanced
around to third base on a single by Ryan Lavarnway. Jorge Padron got the RBI, flying out to right field to score Rizzo.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Richmond responded with a run. Darren Ford led off with a single, and moved to second base on a balk by Kyle Weiland. After a pair of outs, Brandon Belt walked, putting runners on first and third. Weiland then threw wild to first base on a pickoff attempt, scoring Ford and moving Belt to second.
The Flying Squirrels then tied the score in the fifth. With one out, Tyler LaTorre and Clay Timpner both walked. After a wild pitch, Brad Boyer lined a single up the middle, scoring LaTorre. Timpner tried to score as well, but was gunned down at the plate on a perfect throw by Che-Hsuan Lin.
Both starting pitchers received no-decisions, allowing two runs in five innings for their respective clubs. Kyle Weiland allowed two hits and three walks, while striking out five for Portland. David Mixon allowed five hits and four walks, while striking out two for Richmond.
Andy Sisco tossed a perfect top of the sixth inning for the Flying Squirrels, and was given a run to work with in the bottom half. With one out, Thomas Neal was hit by a pitch. He then stole second base on his way to scoring, on Brandon Belt's RBI single to left-center.
Sisco was also perfect in the seventh, but the Sea Dogs got to him in the eighth. With one man on and two outs, Anthony Rizzo walked on four pitches. Ryan Lavarnway followed with an RBI single on an 0-2 pitch, tying the game at three. At that point, Sisco was replaced by Rafael Cova, who immediately gave up a two-run double to Jorge Padron, as Portland took a 5-3 lead.
Richmond got one run back in the eighth on an RBI fielder's choice by Sharlon Schoop, before pulling even in the ninth. Clay Timpner started the inning with a walk, and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Brad Boyer. After Darren Ford struck out, Nick Noonan launched a double to right field, bringing home Timpner with the tying run.
Despite giving up the tying run, the Sea Dogs came right back to take the lead in the tenth. Ryan Lavarnway started the frame with a single. Matt Sheely ran for Lavarnway, and eventually made it to third base. With two outs and two strikes, Chih-Hsien Chiang smoked a double to right field, scoring Sheely with the go-ahead run.
Jason Rice (3-2) allowed the Flying Squirrels to tie the game in the ninth, but pitched a perfect tenth inning to secure his win. In the game, Rice went three innings, allowing two runs, three hits, and one walk, while striking out four. Mitch Lively (2-3) was the losing pitcher, allowing one run, one hit, and two walks in one and two-thirds innings.
The Sea Dogs and Flying Squirrels will conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 5:05. Craig Westcott (3-1, 4.35) will make the start for Richmond, while Portland has yet to name a starting pitcher.
