Dogs lose to Trenton 5 - 2

OFFICIAL PORTLAND SEA DOGS GAME WRAP
Daniel Brewer’s two run single in the fifth made sure the Portland Sea Dogs would be unable to recover from an early deficit and fell to the Trenton Thunder 5-2 before a sellout crowd of 7,368 at Hadlock Field on Saturday night.

As they did the night before, Trenton jumped out to an early lead by scoring in the first inning.  This time, Trenton would scratch three across against Portland starter Stephen Fife.  Justin Christian started things off with a double through the hole a shortstop and came around to score the games’ first run two batters later on a Brewer single.

With Brewer at first, Austin Krum smacked his eighth home run of the year to give Trenton a 3-0 lead before the Portland offense had a turn.

Alfredo Aceves of the New York Yankees started on the hill for Trenton tonight, as part of his major league rehabilitation stint.

Portland was able to scrape one run across against Aceves in the second when Ryan Khoury lifted his second home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center field.

Aceves’ night would be finished after striking out Nate Spears to lead off the third inning.  He would work 2.1 innings and allowed one run on three hits; he walked one and struck out two.

Josh Schmidt entered the game in place of Aceves and struck Jose Iglesias.  But a two out walk to Anthony Rizzo would come back to haunt Trenton.  After Rizzo stole second, Luis Exposito would drive in his team leading 85th RBI to bring Portland within a run.

After a rocky first inning, Fife settled in to throw three scoreless frames, but suffered the loss for Portland evening his record at 6-6.  However, Brewer drove in Christian and Krum with a single to left-center field extending the Trenton lead to 5-2.

Hector Noesi (8-4), who was originally slated to make the start for Trenton before Aceves’ rehab, came on in the fourth inning and would finish the final six to earn the win. Noesi went six innings allowing four hits and struck out six without walking a batter.

The Portland bullpen kept the Sea Dogs within reach all night after going down three on the Brewer single in the fifth.  The combination of Eammon Portice, Ryne Miller, and Jason Rice would throw the final four innings for Portland, holding the Trenton offense scoreless with only two hits.

In two innings of work, Portice had four strikeouts.

The homestand concludes with a 1:00 PM contest Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field.  Right-handed pitcher Alex Wilson (3-4, 6.79) takes the hill for Portland.  He’ll be opposed by Trenton righty Andrew Brackman (3-7, 3.68)
