#SeaDogs knock off Bowie 6-3

The Sea Dogs (55-60) scored four unearned runs in the eighth inning to erase a 3-2 deficit, and take the series opener from the Bowie Baysox (63-52), 6-3 on Tuesday night at Prince George’s Stadium.

Daniel Turpen (1-0) worked two perfect innings in relief of Jeremy Kehrt to notch his first win in the Red Sox system. Kehrt earned a quality start, allowing three runs on four hits in six innings pitched. Jason Rice picked up his 12th Double-A save with a scoreless ninth inning. Bowie reliever Raul Rivero (1-1) was saddled with the loss, surrendering all four unearned runs in the eighth inning.

Trailing 3-2 with two outs in the eighth inning, the Sea Dogs had Che-Hsuan Lin at second base with Nate Spears batting. Spears hit a soft ground ball up the first base line, but it went off the glove of Scott Mahoney, enabling Lin to score. The error opened up the flood gates for Bowie as Ray Chang (single), Luis Exposito (double) and Anthony Rizzo (single) had run-scoring hits.

Portland got off to a very quick start, scoring two runs off starter Steve Johnson. Lin started the game with a single, and Spears clocked a two-run homer down the right-field line, giving Portland a 2-0 lead before Bowie batted. Johnson would allow only two hits over the next six innings, yielding two runs, four hits and fanned five over seven.

The Baysox cut the deficit in half with a run in the second inning off Kehrt. Joel Guzman led off with a double, and scored when Brandon Waring hit into a 6-4-3 double play. Bowie tied the game in the next frame on Jonathan Tucker’s solo-homer to straight away left field.

Bowie untied the game in the sixth inning, scoring the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by Kehrt to take a 3-2 advantage. Carlos Rojas, who scored the run, led off the inning with a walk.

The Sea Dogs and Baysox meet in game two of the series on Wednesday night from Prince George’s Stadium beginning at 7:05. Portland has not named their starting pitcher; Bowie will have lefty Pedro Viola on the hill (3-1, 2.61).
